Zulu (musician)

ZULU (born Dominic Rowland, November 14, 1975) is a Panamanian dancehall reggae singer.

Background

Zulu achieved notoriety as a producer of House music and Underground Hip-Hop during the late 1990s in Chicago. After a contractual dispute with former partners, Zulu embraced his Panamanian-Jamaican roots and choose to pursue a career singing Reggae.

Zulu's early songs are mixes of English and Spanish lyrics, but subsequent releases are English "Patois" style. As a baritone reared in church choirs, the singer retains a vocal range of 4 octaves. Zulu's songs are recognizable by various catch phrases, such as "Spread The Word" and "You Know The Business". He has released several independent projects in which he favored distinct self-harmonies, notes of almost operatic quality.

Miscellaneous Collaborations: Beat Science / Kool Keith / Black Silver / Griffen / DJ C / Freak / Don Yute / Bionik / Earatic Static / Aceyalone / Rubber Room

While the traditional Jamaican Reggae scene was slow to accept his initial, non-Riddim releases, his most recent work has garnered favor and heavy rotation throughout the world. In 2003, his skills as a producer and engineer were again tapped by Jamaican label Manatee Records. The arrangement also proved a suitable means of distributing his more popular songs in vinyl. Zulu is currently preparing the follow-up to his "Riddim Killah" L.P., entitled "Elixir".
