XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero
The XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero is one of the Gundam type mobile suits in the anime series New Mobile Report Gundam W.
XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero
Role in Gundam Wing
The XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero was the first Gundam designed in the After Colony Era. It was the only one of its kind for over fifteen years until Operation Meteor sent five pilots and their Gundams to wage war against the United Earth Sphere Alliance and OZ.
The Wing Zero came to be in existence as a blueprint several years after the development of the first mobile suit, the OZ-00MS Tallgeese. The Tallgeese was (at the time) the pinnacle of human design and achievement. However, the five scientists who developed the Tallgeese soon realized the Tallgeese would be used by the ruling military arm of the United Earth Sphere Alliance as a tool for its own purposes.
When the five scientists discovered the actions of the Alliance, they sought to get justice for the space colonies by creating another mobile suit. This mobile suit would be designed to surpass the Tallgeese in every way. The scientists used their combined knowledge to design the suit and create the most advanced alloy in the conditions of deep space: Gundanium.
Gundanium alloy was virtually indestructible in all practicalities and could withstand all the known weapons of the Alliance. Gundanium, however, was very difficult and expensive to manufacture and without the funding, the group could not mass produce Gundanium. With that in mind, the designs of the project was officially discontinued by the five scientists, who then decided to create their own personal Gundams based on the blueprints for their still existing plan to defeat the United Earth Sphere Alliance and OZ. Thus the first Gundam existed only in computer schematics and on paper. The scientists knew that their creation would be able defeat the Alliance with little difficulty should it ever be produced.
In AC 195, Gundam Sandrock pilot Quatre Raberba Winner, who was reeling from his father's death, used his family's fortune to finally build the scientists' ultimate creation after discovering the blueprints in his family's computer database.
Thus the Wing Zero was born. The Wing Zero is remarkable for the sheer magnitude of its design and arsenal to create a truly devastating weapon. Along with its beam sabers and shoulder mounted machine cannons, the Wing Zero possessed one of the most devastating weapons ever wielded by a single mobile suit: the Twin Buster rifle. When fired as a unit, the devastating double beam rifle could destroy space colonies; when separated, the rifles could destroy entire waves of targets. It was said that the beam rifle was powerful enough to ionize a mobile suit near it, thus able to destroy targets even not directly shot by the beam. In addition to being extremely maneuverable and fast, Wing Zero also had the "Neo Bird" Mode, granting the transformed Wing Zero an Immense speed boost in both zero gravity and atmospheric combat.
The ultimate feature of the Wing Zero, however, which totally set it apart from most other mobile suit was the "ZERO" (Zoning & Emotional Range Omitted) combat computer/pilot interface system in its cockpit. This new system could merge with the mind of the pilot, though how is not completely known. The system was said to sample a pilot's thoughts and grant him/her the knowledge and skills to achieve total victory...or total defeat. Essentially, this system could feed literally billions of units of combat information to the pilot, and present various scenarios and outcomes, which the pilot could choose from, depending on his/her frame of mind.
Ironically, this devastating feature which was the Wing Zero's ultimate strength was also the Gundam's ultimate weakness. The pilot of the Wing Zero had to be of great mental and emotional endurance to handle the full power of the ZERO system. The scientists knew that any normal pilot exposed to ZERO system could become totally unstable, become unable to tell the difference between friend and foe, and even causes mental break-down or death. Even Gundam pilots, like Quatre(until he had to organize the battle strategy of the gundams) and Duo, could not handle the system. It also took Heero and Zechs some time to get used to it.
With the completed Wing Zero, Quatre Raberba Winner easily destroyed all mobile suits which attacked him and even destroyed a whole space colony with only one shot from his buster rifle. Winner was nearly driven insane by the ZERO system before being stopped by fellow Gundam pilots Heero Yuy and Trowa Barton after both pilots resorted to using extreme measures to stop him. Later the Wing Zero was passed on to other various people before falling into the hands of Zechs Merquise and finally, Heero Yuy.
The Wing Zero played a valuable part in the final stages in the war as its abilities and that of its pilot Heero were the only ones that were on the same level as Zechs, who was the leader of the rebel group White Fang at that point. The Two would go all out in a duel over the fate of Earth, with Heero in the Wing Zero being victorious in the end. In the war's final minutes, the power of the Wing Zero and the RESOLVE of its pilot allowed it to destroy the final fragment of the White Fang battle station Libra at the last possible moment, which was on a collision course with Earth.
Role in Endless Waltz
To distinguish the two forms of Wing Zero, its form in Endless Waltz is named "Wing Gundam Zero Custom", and is sometimes simply called by many fans as Wing Zero Custom. After the war, the Wing Zero and the other Gundams, excluding the XXXG-01S2 Altron Gundam, were sent to the sun for destruction. But due to the rising of the Mariemaia Army, the Gundams were recovered and used against Mariemaia and her army. Heero used the Wing Zero to first fight against Wufei Chang (who had joined the Mariemaia Army at the time) and later used the buster rifle to destroy the base of the Mariemaia Army in Brussels. But due to the damage it took in the previous fight, the Wing Zero was finally destroyed after it fired the third and final shot on the headquarters.
Redesigned for the OVA, the Wing Zero is by far the most visually changed of the five Gundams from the series to Endless Waltz. Many of the red colored pieces of armor have been recolored blue, to give Wing Zero an overall white and blue motif. The armor mounted on Wing Zero's arms is redesigned as well, and the overall body sports a more streamlined "thin" appearance less bulky than its appearance in the series. The largest difference is by far the back booster system, the Wing Zero's "wings" in other words. Instead of twin modules that can split into two, the Wing Zero Custom has stunning angel like wings that give it nothing short of an ethereal presence. These angel wings are split into roughly four sections, but there are times the wings seem almost biomechanical, moving in more natural ways as opposed to mechanical bending, although this could merely be an illusion given off by the already eye catching wings. Besides the obvious visual differences between the television series and Endless Waltz versions of the Wing Zero, there were a few relevant technical differences: the movie version could not transform into "Neo Bird" Mode since the wings were different and lacked a shield. However, the wing modules contained dozens of miniature vernier thrusters within them, giving the Wing Zero unparalleled combat maneuverability; even more so than the television version. The wings were also heat-shielded to enable the Wing Zero to achieve planetary re-entry under its own power (claims that the wings could also be used as defensive shields, have yet to be conclusively proven). The beam sabers were mounted differently in the movie version, also. The armament, however, was mostly unchanged from TV to film, though the film version had fewer of the relatively inconsequential vulcan guns.It is still unknown to most fans where the Wing Zero Custom either holds the buster rifles in hand during use, or is held in the wings. There was no answer to when it got the rifles right before it show up during the battle at Mariemaia's base. The "Endless Waltz" manga does attempt to address this issue by showing the twin buster rifle being stored on the back of the suit, just between the wings. Thus, the twin buster rifle is always carried with the mobile suit "within reach," and also explains how the suit came to have the twin buster rifle when it destroyed Mariemaia's Base.
Apparently, the distinct visual change to all the Gundams including Wing Zero from the series to Endless Waltz is not canon. After the popularity of their redesigns as well as the introduction of the "Ver.Ka" redesigns of the original five Gundams in the series (unseen in Endless Waltz), it seems implied that the viewer is to treat it as if the Gundams always looked this way (or vice versa depending on one's taste); notably, in the flashback to the events of the TV series final episode, the Gundams are depicted as they are in the present. However, due to numerous complaints received by fans of the series, an explanation was given in the manga entitled "Gundam W: Ground Zero", where Heero reconstructed the design of the Wing Zero based on an idea he wanted to see through. (A concept to which Duo compared to "customizing a sports car".) It was only afterwards they discovered this they decided to send the gundams into the sun. This however conflicts with another manga sidestory, "battlefield of the pacifists", where the idea to send the gundams into the sun was brought up as a reason to dispose of the numerous mobile dolls left after the war. As a result, the reason given in "Ground Zero" is not accepted by many as canon. Despite this however, the redesign of Zero remains a striking visual image, making it instantly recognizable to fans of the Gundam Wing series and OVA. The Zero Custom has also become increasingly popular with fans despite it's non canon alteration in appearance, even more so than its "canonical" appearance, especially in the use of video games. The OVA version of Zero appears in several Japanese Gundam and Mecha games, and has also, to date, appeared in at least four games which have been released in America. The first is Gundam Battle Assault 2, the second is Battle Assault 3 Featuring Gundam Seed, which was the third Gundam Battle Assault game. The third of which is Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space. It also appears, in a more or less chibified state, in MS Saga: A New Dawn, though it is erroneously referred to as the Wing Gundam.
Wing Gundam Seraphim
Wing Gundam Seraphim is a Gundam-type mobile suit from the After Colony timeline, first introduced in the anime series New Mobile Report Gundam Wing. It does not appear in the anime; its first and only appearance is in the semi-canon story Tiel's Impulse () , published in the Ultimate Playing Book () , a model kit mook (magazine-book). ISBN 4-408-61474-2
Shortly before the end of the Eve Wars, the Romefeller Foundation used data taken from the five rebel Gundams to construct new mass production model mobile suits. Wing Gundam Seraphim was based off of the XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero Custom, as well as the Gundam Lucifer. Intended as a general purpose design, Wing Seraphim retains Wing Zero's beam sabers and machinecannons while gaining a custom beam rifle modelled after the twin buster rifle. The most relevant design feature, however, was an improved version of the ZERO System. Appropriately dubbed ZERO System Ver 2.5, Wing Seraphim's system provides faster reaction times and better predictions while eliminating the problems that plagued Gundam Lucifer's ZERO System Ver 2.0. Its design is highly similar to Wing Zero's, but with a different coloring scheme. The shield-like main wings, used to protect against the heat of re-entry, are normally folded into the hip armor.
At least six units were produced at a secret factory on Colony X18722. After the war's end, a group of civilians led by Tiel Nonblue headed to the colony under the pretenses of a choir performance. Breaking into the factory, the group captured three Gundams and used them to track down Tiel's older brother, who vanished while testing the Gundam Lucifer. Tiel used her new Gundam to search for her brother while avoiding the pursuit of Romefeller loyalists with Gundams of their own.
