WXTZ-FM
WXTZ-FM is a non-profit, community based Part 15 FM radio station located in Southeastern Connecticut and serves the Norwich, Connecticut listening area. Originally located at 107.1 MHz on the FM broadcast band, it was displaced on August 15 of 2014 to 87.9 MHz because of co-channel interference.
History
The radio station began its on air operations on the morning of June 16 of 2013 on 107.1 MHz as a single transmitter, part 15 FM radio station. The station increased it's signal range by feeding several FM transmitters known as translators, which are located in various areas of Southeastern Connecticut. The translators rebroadcast the audio steam covering a much larger market area.
WXTZ-FM is a commercial free, self supporting radio station, that is currently offering the New London County market area with an over the air radio service that it currently lacks, which is a 'multi-genre' music station. It plays all the hit music that is often played on various other radio stations in the local area.
The daily programming schedule on this station is mostly ran by a computer based automation program, that randomly picks songs from a play list of 3002 songs. The evening schedule is often manned by a live DJ. The music played during these live shows, is mostly played from vinyl records. The station prides its self as being one of the few stations that play the whole album when a 33 1/3 RPM record or CD is played.
The music often heard on this station, appears to fall under the following genres: Techno, Rock, Heavy Metal, Southern Rock, Top 40, Oldies music from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and the year 2000 to today's Current Release Music of 2014, Country, 70's Disco, Soul Music, Hip Hop music and Trance.
It should be kept in mind, that WXTZ-FM is simply a branding name and is not to be considered or assumed to be Federal Communications Commission (FCC) assigned set of call letters. It is a what the FCC calls a Part 15 FM broadcast Station, often branded as Z-87.9 FM during its station identification which is provided several times per hour.
WXTZ-FM is currently working on an attempt to be Connecticut's first FCC Part 15, C-Quam AM Stereo radio station and intends on simulcasting its current FM programming on the AM Broadcast Band in AM Stereo. This is intended to extend the listener range so more people can receive the station at a legal FCC Part 15 allowed distance from the AM transmitting antenna.
WXTZ-FM Does not currently have its own website, however, it does rely on listener feedback on its Facebook page which is under the same branding name WXTZ-FM.
