Whitebeck Court

Whitebeck Court is a 16 storey tower block, 44.2 meters tall, located on Moorway Drive in Manchester, England and constructed in 1967 as part of Manchester Corporation community housing. Previously, before the tower was built the land it currently stands on was full of rows and rows of terraced houses, but they were all demolished in favour of several towers and Whitebeck was one of them.

In May 2008 Manchester City Council submitted a bid to the Department Of Health Extra Care Fund 2008-11 with a proposal to transform an existing vacant tower block into a mixed tenure extra care scheme with communal facilities. In August 2008 it was announced that the bid was successful and Manchester was awarded £6.54 million to deliver the scheme.

The scheme will consist of 92 one and two bed apartments which will be available for rent through Northwards Housing. This differs from the original bid which included a proportion for owner occupation.

The ground floor of the building will accommodate a range of communal facilities known as the ‘Community Hub’. These facilities will be available to both people living in the scheme and will also serve the wider community. There are a number of general needs tower blocks catering for the over 50 in close proximity that will benefit from this new development
