Walton School of Auctioneering

The Walton School of Auctioneering is an auction school located near Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

Many states have licensing laws that require individuals, seeking licensure as an auctioneer, to complete a course of study at an approved auction school as part of their qualifications to become licensed to practice in that state. Many of these states also have apprenticeship and testing requirements (both written and oral) that must be met in order for an applicant to become licensed.

The Walton School of Auctioneering provides approved instruction for Ohio [1] [2], Alabama[3], South Carolina[4], Virginia[5]., West Virginia[6], and Florida.[7]

History

The Walton School of Auctioneering is a subsidiary of Walton & Associates Inc.. Walton & Associates, Inc. Formed in 1976 as a Management Development, Consulting and Training organization has been involved in training over 20,000 people in over 50 of Fortune’s Top 100 Companies. The firm has conducted seminars on an international basis since its inception. In 1978, Walton & Associates diversified its operation into the auction profession. Since that time it has conducted over 3,000 auctions in the Industrial, Heavy Equipment, Government, Real Estate, Auto and Antique fields. In 1989, Walton & Associated diversified further and opened the doors of the Walton School of Auctioneering, making it the oldest operating auction school in Ohio. The school focuses on teaching the business of auctioneering based on the acumen developed by conducting thousands of auctions. Emphasis is placed on getting students well grounded in the core areas of education required by state licensing agencies and then focusing on the “how to” of getting off to a faster start in the business. Limiting class size to 20 students per class has allowed the school to focus individual attention on each student. With well over 800 graduates, the Walton School of Auctioneering is also Ohio’s largest auction school.

Curriculum

The Walton School of Auctioneering curriculum is structured to meet state licensing requirements and their goal of getting students off to a faster start in the profession by teaching the “how to” skills surrounding the following 14 areas

  1. Bid calling and voice control
  2. History of Auctions
  3. Federal and state laws regulating the auction profession
  4. Getting started as an auctioneer
  5. Consignment auctions and auction galleries
  6. Auctions of antiques and furniture
  7. Marketing, advertising and promoting the auction and public relations
  8. Farm equipment and livestock auctions
  9. Real estate auctions
  10. Auto auctions (both dealer and public)
  11. Industrial plant and large equipment auctions
  12. Exams and reviews
  13. Estate and bankruptcy auctions
  14. Federal firearms auction laws

Terms are held quarterly, typically in February, June, September, and December.

Students have attended the school from 17 states and 3 countries. Some have gone on to top bid calling honors in state competitions[8]. Others students work on highly regarded television programs such as Antiques Roadshow and History Detectives. [9] More in line with the focus of the school is that many have gone on to very successful careers as businesspeople in the industry.

Continuing Education

The Walton School of Auctioneering provides continuing education classes for auctioneers. All graduates receive free lifetime scholarships to attend any portion or all sessions in any future class. Many graduate apprentices prepare for their upcoming state auctioneers exams by revisiting the law review portion of class just prior to sitting for their exams.
