VP/GM
Vice-President/General Manager (VP/GM) is a corporate title given to top/senior management individuals who manages a company's strategic business unit or a geographical region. It is preferred at the company's subsidiary levels because it indicates that this post usually reports to the President or Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
The VP/GM of a strategic business unit or a geographical region has full responsibility for the P&L, sales, marketing, operations, finance, procurement of the division he/she manages.
This title has similar function to the Managing Director (MD) of the strategic business unit or a geographical region.
Managing Director/General Manager (MD/GM)
In addition, the MD of a country (or site leader) can have General Manager (GM) responsibility for a strategic division of a company (known as a strategic business unit). This person usually assumes The Title Country Managing Director and Business Unit General Manager (MD/GM).
At country level, the MD/GM is considered the CEO of his/her site responsibility and is accountable for the site's legal and accounting practices. The MD/GM usually reports directly to the President or CEO on a weekly or monthly basis. In addition, as Business Unit General Manager, the MD/GM is also responsible for the strategic business unit's growth and profitability and has the option to hire a Business Unit Manager (BUM) or Business Unit Director (BUD) to assist at subsidiary levels.
Limitations
Without the corporate titles, "VP" or "MD" next to the title "GM", the individual holding the title "GM" only is usually not considered senior management associates. The GM might have to report to the MD who in turn reports to the President or CEO. Companies who usually has associates managing a strategic business unit or a geographical region who report directly to the Group's President or CEO are accorded with the additional title VP or MD to indicate full business control at subsidiary levels.
VP/GM and MD/GM Privilege
The VP/GM or MD/GM is considered the highest and most powerful associate at the business level he/she manages and is accorded with wide-ranging privileges. Some of the privileges are company car, first/business class air travel, country club membership, etc.
