Viola Nimuhamya

Viola Nimuhamya (born 1996) is a Ugandan visual and sculptural artist whose work includes fiber art, installation, and sculpture, exploring memory, identity and material storytelling. She is a Ugandan but based in Bergen Norway. Her work reflects a dialogue between traditional craft ant contemporary art practices, challenging audiences to consider histories carried within materials.

Early life and education

Viola was born and raised in Uganda where she first learned traditional basket weaving techniques from women in her community. She later studied Art and Industrial Design at Kyambogo University in Kampala, Uganda, which laid the foundation for her art practice.

She completed her Master of Fine Art at the University of Bergen.

Artistic career

Nimuhamya's art practice centers on storytelling as a way to process both personal and collective memory. She uses installation, fiber art, and sculpture to create art pieces with emotions to reflect history, materiality and presence.

Nimuhamya works with discarded textiles. Each fabric is transformed into a circular unit that becomes the basis of her sculptural pieces.

Exhibitions and recognition

In 2022 she exhibited and conducted research at the Njabala Foundation in Kampala.

She exhibited at the UPNEXT 2025 open call exhibition she exhibited her piece called: One at a Time, presented by Southnord in Stockholm, Sweden.
