'The View Askew Timeline' shows the works of Kevin Smith's View Askewniverse, such as comic books and feature films, chronologically.

Kevin's Words

Excerpted from the View Askewniverse Tenth Anniversary Almanac-

''"You can try to figure it out (I've spent the last year trying to do so; that's why I'm so late on Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do and Daredevil: Target... I swear), but it's about as confusing as 'Holden(McNeil)'s three-way proposal:

"Mallrats comes before Clerks, the third issue of Chasing Dogma repeats a version of itself in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and the Clerks Cartoon doesn't even count (except Bear is Driving - he rules us all). Best just to offer it all to God and let Her sort it out while you kick back and enjoy the witty dialogue and [...]-[...] jokes that are the spine of most View Askew productions."'' 1

Timeline

In the Beginning...

God creates the universe, which thereafter runs on the principle that God is infallible. God then creates angels. A war breaks out in heaven between God and the Angel LUCIFER. Heaven factions into two sides. In the end, God banishes Lucifer and his followers to Hell, and then turns his wrath on those who did not pick a side in the battle, this includes a Muse named Azrael. Azrael was created as a compliment to the muse Serendipity, however, unlike Serendipity, Azrael refuses to fight in the war. As a result Azrael is transformed into a demon and sent to hell.

Eventually, god creates man, in the form of Adam. The sixth Adam is the actual progenitor of the human race as the first five were destroyed by the awesome power of God's voice. To overcome this communication problem God appoints Metatron to be his/her voice. God also dubs Loki his/her Angel of Death. Loki is later responsible for the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Noah's great flood, among other acts of God's wrath. However, one day after Loki finishes [...] all the first born sons of Egypt, his friend, an angel named Bartleby, talks him out of being God's Angel of Death over a few drinks. Loki proceeds to quit his job and gives God the finger.

Not only does God forbid Angels from drinking after that day, but he/she also kicks Loki and Bartleby out of heaven for all eternity, banishing them to a place worse than hell, Wisconsin.

Early A.D.

0000

December 25, 0000: Jesus Christ, a black man and the result of a virgin birth, is born to Mary and Joseph.

From dialog in Dogma.

0012

Jesus Christ is told by the angel Metatron that he is the son of God. It takes Christ eighteen years to get over this revelation, a period of time not covered in the Bible, where Mary and Joseph have children of their own through more conventional methods.

From dialog in Dogma.

0030

Jesus Christ starts to preach the word of God, he is joined by 13 Apostles, the 13th of which is named Rufus. One day at a wedding in Canaan Jesus tells Rufus the secrets to the resurrection, but a drunk Rufus forgets.

From dialog in Dogma.

0033

Jesus Christ is crucified, but not before giving Rufus a note that predicts Rufus's death.

From dialog in Dogma.

0035

Rufus is stoned to death by the people of Antioch after insisting that Christ was a black man.

From dialog in Dogma.

19th Century

1896

Saint Michael's Church is built in New Jersey.

This is possibly an incorrect entry. In Dogma a banner states that the church was created in 1898 and that 1998 is its hundredth anniversary, however, according to all other sources Dogma takes place in 1996, which would make the church's year of creation 1896. One possible explanation is that the church's construction began in 1896 and finished in 1898.

Assumes he was 20 when he graduated from junior college.

Described in Clerks (the animated series) Episode 2. The exact date on this conjecture, but since the pair know each other by 1977 this event has to take place prior to that incident. In support of this placement the voice over in the episode does say that their meeting takes place in the 70s. It is debatable if the series is canon or not.

1977
  • Banky Edwards and Holden McNeil are in third grade where a nun describes The Holy Trinity. Banky takes offense to this and starts an argument which ends with the nun calling him "[...] [...]-rag."

Holden describes this in Chasing Amy.

  • Fellow third-grader Randal Graves has a confrontation with his teacher when he gets an "F" on a paper about the film Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo. It seems Randal felt that Herbie represented a love for hating Jews.

Dante describes this incident in Clerks (Holiday Special).

Also, two weeks after the abortion the med-school student drops out of school because he can't stand the sight of blood. He goes on to sell shoes in Monticello.

Described in Dogma: A Screenplay.

Described in Clerks II

  • Rick Derris, Roddy, Steve-Dave Pulasti, Walter Flanagan (see note below), and Shannon Hamilton graduate from North High School.

From the Chasing Amy laser disc jacket. The disc jacket lists Walt Grover and Walt Flanagan as separate people; however, both Walts are always seen in the presence of Steve-Dave. This leads me to believe that they are, in fact, the same person. This is supported as Walt is not named in any of the films and his credit is simply Walt "Fan Boy." His full name was not listed until Walt Flanagan's Dog.

1986
  • Dante Hicks and Caitlin Bree begin their turbulent five year relationship. Dante loses his virginity to Caitlin, an event captured on video tape by Randal Graves. At one point they even are caught having [...] in the bedroom of Mr. and Mrs. Jones, parents of the three Jones sisters.

From dialog in Clerks and Clerks (the animated series) Episode 2.

  • After trying unsuccessfully to conceive a child Bethany goes to a doctor to see if everything is okay on her end. It is not; seems that the med-school student used unclean instruments during the abortion which caused an infection that destroyed Bethany's uterus. Bethany comes clean and tells Brett all. He divorces her. Brett will eventually remarry and have two kids. Bethany goes to work for a Planned Parenthood clinic. Shortly thereafter Bethany's mom is trying to console her through this crisis on the phone, it is during this conversation that Bethany loses her faith in god.

In Dogma: A Screenplay Bethany describes this as taking place five years after the abortion.

One night he is going down on her when a cat lands on her stomach, causing her to do a pelvic thrust that knocks out one of Banky's teeth. After this, Banky starts a six-month relationship with Brandi Svenning that is marked by uneventful oral [...]. This changes one night when Banky changes his routine; however, they are interrupted by Mr. Svenning, who causes damage to Banky's neck when he pulls his head away from Brandi.

It is the only time they have [...] together.

Both these events are described in Mallrats; however, no date was given, so I have placed them one year prior to Gwen and T.S.'s break up.

From dialog in Clerks.

  • Dante and Randal start their first year of high school. A fellow student in their class named Lance Dowds is selected for the freshman hazing tradition, and he has a pickle inserted into his [...] and is forced to walk ten feet with it in. Randal and the others henceforth dub him "Pickle [...]."

From dialog in Clerks II.

  • During a different party at John K's that year, Gwen Turner and her boyfriend T.S. Quint meet Brodie Bruce at the Marina Diner. Brodie announces that he has found the perfect girl; unfortunately, this girl (possibly Alyssa Jones) is with Mel Callahan. This does not stop the girl from flirting with Gwen. Later at the party, Gwen and the girl in question have an intimate encounter in a bathroom. This not only depresses Brodie and Mel, but causes T.S. to break up with Gwen.

This comes from a page of Gwen's diary that was published in the Mallrats book. The date is conjecture; however, the incident was said to take place the night of a party at John K's.

  • May 1988: During North's senior prom, Alyssa Jones shows up with a twenty-six year old man and then leaves halfway through to have [...] with him and Gwen Turner in a limo.

  • September 1988: Alyssa Jones starts college, and while attending has [...] with Shannon Hamilton. The encounter is video-taped, and Hamilton broadcasts it the next day on the campus cable access channel.

Described in Chasing Amy; date assumes Alyssa started college right after high school.

  • Veronica Loughran begins attending classes at Seton Hall. She hangs out with her friend Sylvan (this is possibly Sylvan Derris, sister to Rick Derris) and sleeps with John Fragson and Rob Stanslyk. She will also suck over thirty different dicks while she is there, including Willam Black's. At the same time, Caitlin Bree starts to take classes at another college.

From dialog in Clerks.

Dante's stunt is reported in the local newspaper The Courier, with Randal Graves' submited picture of Dante being rescued along side it.

From dialog in Dogma.

  • February 1991: Jared Svenning televises the disastrous Monmouth State Governor's Ball. It is his last public offering before "Truth or Date," a year later.

In the same issue, Alyssa Jones's Idiosyncratic Routine is named as a title to watch, and Hooper X's White Hating Coon is said to have switched publishers from Flatman to Opiate Press because of creative differences. • February 1996: Comic Buyers Guide features Bluntman and Chronic #1; this assumes the issue was published at about the same time.

This article is used in the opening of Chasing Amy. One could assume that the story of Bluntman and Chronic #1 is the one featured in both the opening credits of Chasing Amy and the Clerks/Chasing Amy script book.

  • Later that month: Jay and Silent Bob, desperate for cash, demand that Holden McNeil and Banky Edwards start paying them royalties under the table for the use of their likeness in Bluntman and Chronic.

This is conjectural, based on Jay and Silent Bob's scene in Chasing Amy.

  • March 1995: Mister Newman's former girlfriend kills herself. He sends flowers to her wake.

From dialog in Dogma.

  • April 1996: Banky and Holden are interviewed in Wizard; this is around the time of publishing of Bluntman and Chronic #2.

This article is used in the opening of Chasing Amy. One could assume that the story of Bluntman and Chronic #2 is the one featured in real life Oni Double Feature #12.

  • While on a trip to buy the second issue of Bluntman and Chronic at Comicology, Holden and Banky are forced to break a window after being provoked by Steve-Dave and Walt Flanagan.

As seen in the Chasing Amy laserdisc and script.

  • April/May 1996: Holden and Banky attend a comic convention in New York City to help promote Bluntman and Chronic. At the con, their friend Hooper X introduces them to Alyssa Jones. The next night Hooper invites Holden and Banky to Meow Mix to meet up with Alyssa, where they discover she is gay.

The next day, the pair are offered a deal for an animated Bluntman and Chronic series by a pair of MTV executives (one of whom is possibly related to Gil, Grant, and Dante Hicks).

A Bluntman and Chronic Annual is also released about this time.

Despite her gayness, Holden and Alyssa strike up a friendship that turns into a love affair within the next month. This causes tension in the relationship between Banky and Holden, and it ends up breaking up both their friendship and Holden's love affair with Alyssa.

All these events are from Chasing Amy.

  • Mid-May 1996: Professor Peebles, head of primate testing at Provasik Pharmaceuticals, fires Doctor Hannah Ogee after she complains about the nature of the animal tests. She sneaks back into the lab and doctors order for Suzanne, an ape, to be moved to a Chicago lab. Once she has Suzanne, she plans to move to a section of rain forest she owns and start a wild life preserve.

As mentioned in Jay and Silent Bob #3, this does assume that these events took place two weeks prior to the issue.

  • May 27, 1996: A homeless man, who is later given the name John Doe Jersey, is attacked on the Asbury Park boardwalk by the Stygian Triplets, demos from hell that work for Azrael. The man is put on life support, but the state decides that he should be taken off. The Arch-bishop of Trenton Diocese decides to oppose this and uses it as a rallying cry to stop euthanasia. Little does the Church or State know that it is in fact God trapped in the body of John Doe Jersey. God had been on one of his ski-ball sabbaticals.

First scene in Dogma. Euthanasia material described in film.

  • May 31, 1996: After six months, Tricia Jones evicts Jay and Silent Bob from her apartment. Unfortunately, they are leaving just as USA Today reporter Jean Swellback shows up to interview Tricia about Borgasm.

The pair proceed to Channel Surfers at Eden Prairie Mall where they are told to leave by security, they then hit hit Quick Stop / RST Video, but Randal calls the cops on them, and finally they are forced to leave Comic Toast by Steve-Dave and Walt "Fanboy."

The encounter with Steve-Dave and Walt appears only in the Chasing Dogma Trade Paper Back collection, check out the extra page here with thanks to ZMS.

  • A short time after this Steve-Dave and Walt take a trip to Chi-Town.

They appear outside the planned parenthood clinic in Dogma.

Later that day the pair decide to leave Red Bank, New Jersey, for Shermer, Illinois (they do not realize it is a fictional town used only in John Hughes movies). They buy tickets, meet Holden McNeil for their royalty money at the Marina Diner (seen in Chasing Amy), and depart via bus for Chicago.

This issue also confirms that Willam from Mallrats (you decide if this is the same Willam "Snowball" Black from Clerks) has yet to see the magic eye picture (according to the end of Mallrats he will eventually see it), and that after Mallrats' Roddy, Mr. Svenning's assistant, begins working at Channel Surfers in Eden Prairie Mall. From Jay and Silent Bob #1 (note this issue overlaps with Chasing Amy).

June 1996: Randal Graves orders an Asian mail order bride, however to due to a mistake on the form he ends up with mail order Husband, Tsero. Despite some early conflicts the two start to make the marriage work, unfortunately, Tasero's company transfers him and the couple has to separate.

To help ease his friends pain, Dante takes Randal to Las Vegas, where the two prove the adage of "Unlucky at love, lucky at cards" wrong. This forces the pair to consider becoming priests, but they end up mistakenly taking marriage vows.

Described in Clerks (the animated series) Episode 2. The exact date on this is conjecture, but since Jay and Silent Bob don't seem to know about these events I assume it happened while they were out of town in Dogma.

June 1, 1996: In New Jersey, Cardinal Ignatius Glick, head of the Vatican's P.R. Force, announces that the Catholic religion will be getting a long needed aesthetic overhaul thanks to a multi-million dollar advertising blitz dubbed, "Catholicism, WOW!"

The new symbol of the religion becomes "Buddy Christ." To help launch the "Catholicism, WOW!" campaign Cardinal Glick is going to reeducate the St. Michael's Church. The gateway to the soon-to-be hundred year old church will serve as a passageway of plenary indulgence, a little-known Catholic belief that offers all who pass though its arches a morally clean slate. The media event is covered by Grant Hicks. From Jay and Silent Bob #4. One week prior to the issue. Seen also in Dogma.

Wisconsin: Bartleby receives a a newspaper article regarding the St. Michael's redaction. Little does Bartleby know that Azrael sent him the article. He asks his friend Loki to meet him at the Milwaukee airport. There the two hatch a plan to use the plenary indulgence loophole to renter heaven. Loki also decides this is a good time to act on his plan to [...] the executives in charge of Mooby, The Golden Calf. As seen in Dogma.

Heaven: Metatron realizes Loki and Bartleby's plan, and that by reentering heaven they will prove god wrong and thus unmake existence. Unfortunately, he and all those in Heaven do not know what has become of God. So he decides to tap The Last Scion to help take care of the situation in the hopes that the culprit behind the entire affair will reveal himself in an attempt to stop The Scion. Described in Dogma.

Just outside Pittsburgh: Jay and Silent Bob are forced off the bus to Chicago for smokin' a bowel in the bus's bathroom. As they are near Pittsburgh they decide to head into town and try to get a ride.

After a near fatal encounter with Mr. Rodgers and his sexy chauffeur, Mercy, Silent Bob enters a Mooby store and buys a new hat. Jay, who waits outside reading Bluntman and Chronic #2, ends up bumping into a porno actress. Jay is able to convince her that he and Silent Bob should have a job on her current project, Doogie Nights.

The film in question is being directed by former Doogie Howser star Neil Patrick Harris at a local hospital. It seems Harris is trying to push the limits of the independent film industry by making a Quasi-Indie-Film (or a porno). In any case, Jay is given the job of fluffer. Unfortunately, Jay is too good at his job and leaves the actor unable to perform the scene (if you know what I mean). Jay, unhappy with the little gift the actor gave him, grabs Silent Bob and the two leave the hospital.

That night at a zoo in Indianapolis, Indiana, Federal Wildlife Marshal Sam "Big Dog" Gavert arrives to start a search for the escaped monkey Suzanne, despite rumors that she is dead. Provasik Pharmaceuticals called the team because Suzanne was one of their test subjects. There are several indicators in this book that it takes place in 1998; unfortunately, Chasing Amy (and Jay and Silent Bob #1) is firmly set in 1996. Thus I have chosen to keep the whole series in 1996. One indicator that this book does taken place in 1996 is that Jay is reading an issue of Bluntman and Chronic #2 in this issue, which would have been a fairly recent release around this time.

June 2, 1996: Bethany Sloane attends a church service at St. Stephen's Parish in McHenry, Il. As seen in Dogma.

Jay and Silent Bob awaken under a bridge in Indiana. Jay quickly discovers Suzanne cupping his three-piece. Weirded out by the monkey's presence, Jay imagines a tale of apes ruling the world. Meanwhile, Silent Bob and Suzanne bond. Jay is miffed and goes for some grub.

At the same time, the team of Federal Wildlife Marshals is forced to listen to the standard scenery chewing of their boss, Big Dog, until a report of Suzanne at Sybil's diner comes in.

At Sybil's diner Jay and Silent Bob are eating with Suzanne. Jay is imagining a plan to make some money with Suzanne when the police raid the diner. Big Dog and his team take charge of the cops just in time to catch Jay and Silent Bob trying to sneak Suzanne out of the diner disguised as a little boy. Big Dog falls for the corny ploy. However, the trio only makes it to the sewer drain in a bridge after Big Dog smells bananas on his hand.

Big Dog chases the threesome through the sewer drains to an open pipe. Suzanne is able to trick Big Dog into jumping off the drain. Jay and Silent Bob emerge from the drain only to be confronted by Big Dog's team. However, when the team hears of Big Dog's fate they leave Jay and Silent Bob alone, and the pair are able to get Suzanne to safety.

That night, Jay and Silent Bob find a newspaper article about Doctor Ogee in the paper and with Suzanne's help they return her to the good Doctor. Dr. Ogee gives Jay and Silent Bob two bus tickets to Chicago as a reward and the two are once again on their way to Shermer, Illinois. All this is from Jay and Silent Bob #3.

June 3, 1996: Azrael and the Stygian Triplets kill Mrs. Reynolds and commandeer her quaint suburban home to use it as their base of operations. As seen in Dogma.

June 4, 1996: After purchasing a gun Loki and Bartleby leave Wisconsin via bus for New Jersey.

Liz, a co-worker of Bethany Sloane, arrives at the planned parenthood clinic and is greeted by a mob of protesters that include Steve-Dave and Walt.

After what seems like ten months (at least to them), Jay and Silent Bob finally arrive in Chicago and quickly enlist a confused cab driver, Hnrishivasuryagupte Patel, to take them to what they think is Shermer.

They end up at McHenry High School and quickly make rivals of high school [...] dealers Brian and Andy. Deciding that the best place to sell some smoke is in Home Ec. Jay and Silent Bob crash the class.

There they meet Crystal, a rug munchin' high schooler who educates them about the fictional status of Shermer Il. and sews "Snoogans" onto Jay's hat. Disillusioned as they leave Home Ec. the Semi Dynamic Duo are accosted by Andy and Brian and placed in a wet and sticky situation.

Drenched the pair flee the high school and grab some new threads off of a conveniently placed clothes line. Jay starts to formulate a plan to return to the safety of Trish the Dish's living room, however, he then becomes distracted by the thunderous, but less than sold out, sounds of Forked Tongue.

The pair hang with the burned out 80s metal band that evening and even buy a shirt and pin to commemorate the experience. All this is from Jay and Silent Bob #4.

Nearby, Bethany Sloane is visited by Metatron, the voice of the one true god, and charged with the Holy Crusade of stopping Bartleby and Loki from entering the St. Michael's Archway. To help her Metatron says that she will have the assistance of two prophets. As seen in Dogma.

June 5, 1996: Jay and Silent Bob leave Forked Tongue to the road and head over to a Mooby's for breakfast. Jay decides to stay in Chi-Town in an attempt to try and get laid.

As they exit Mooby's they spot Bethany on her way to work at a Planned Parenthood Clinic. With the help of a group of protesters Jay reasons that a Woman's Clinic is the perfect place to meet loose women. The pair wait in front of the clinic all day with no luck.

As night settles in the pair watch as Bethany leaves the clinic and is followed by trio of attackers on roller blades with hockey sticks. Silent Bob races to the rescue and Jay reluctantly follows. All this is from Jay and Silent Bob #4.

Jay and Silent Bob rescue Bethany from her attackers. Bethany realizes that these are the two prophets that Metatron spoke of and asks them to take her to New Jersey. After careful negotiation Jay and Silent Bob agree, but only if Jay can drive. Unfortunately, Jay has never driven before and he wrecks the car's transmission leaving them stranded on the side of the road.

Little do they know that a bus passing them contains Loki and Bartleby. Loki kills two sinners, a man and woman, on the bus leaving the two angels to walk. As seen in Dogma.

Rufus, the 13th Apostle, decides to help Bethany on her Crusade thinking that he can gain support in Heaven by helping her. Assumed from events in Dogma.

June 6, 1996: A resurrected Rufus drops in on Bethany, Jay, and Silent Bob. He joins their crusade. The quartet walks to a nearby Mooby's for breakfast and shortly thereafter ends up in a strip club where they meet the muse, Serendipity. The group is attacked by the Golgothan [...] demon, which Silent Bob takes care of. Serendipity stays to interrogate the Golgothan while Bethany, Rufus, Jay, and Silent Bob catch a train to Jersey. As seen in Dogma.

Elsewhere, Loki and Bartlbey arrive at the Mooby Corporation and kill all the company executives, except for Miss Price who was the only executive living a good life. The pair then try and catch a bus to Jersey, but find that the bus is sold out. Azrael pays them a visit and suggests they maintain a lower profiles. Thus the angels catch a train to Jersey.

Jay and Silent Bob meet Loki and Bartleby on the train's dinning car. Bethany joins them and quickly strikes up a conversation with Bartleby. Rufus enters the car to join them and recognizes the angels, but not before Bethany told Bartleby about her Crusade. A fight ensues and Silent Bob is able to eject the angels from the train. The Crusaders leave the train for a camp in the forest.

There Rufus tells Bethany what it means to be The Last Scion. Bethany shuns the responsibility, but a talk from Metatron restores her confidence.

Meanwhile, Bartlbey snaps. As seen in Dogma.

June 7, 1996: Bethany, Rufus, Jay, and Silent Bob pay Cardinal Glick a visit in an attempt to stop the reeducation ceremony, but to no avail. As a sign of protest Jay and Silent Bob steal the Cardinal's golf club.

The quartet journey to a bar as Bartleby and Loki enter the state of New Jersey. At the bar the Crusaders are met by Azrael. Serendipity joins them soon after. Azrael and the Stygian Triplets try and hold the group there, but the crusaders are able to defeat Azrael and then journey to St. Michael's.

At St. Michael's, Loki and Bartleby have begun to slaughter the gathered crowd. Loki cuts his wings off thus becoming human. He realizes his mistakes of listening to Bartleby and briefly teams up with Jay and Silent Bob.

The crusaders arrive in time to see Bartleby kill Loki. A fight ensues between Bartleby and the crusaders, during which Bethany figures out that God is trapped in the body of John Doe Jersey. Bethany and Silent Bob race to the St., Michael's Hospital.

At the church Jay uses a submachine gun to remove Bartleby's wings. At the hospital Bethany takes John Doe off life support, and frees God's spirit; unfortunately, she is injured in the release.

Bartleby tries to enter the church, but God and Metatron appear and stop him. After forgiving him, God kills Bartleby, cleans up the mess of dead bodies, and heals Bethany. Bethany also discovers that she is pregnant.

God, Metatron, Serendipity, and Rufus return to heaven leaving Bethany with Jay and Silent Bob. Bartleby and Loki, having become human by being killed before dying, get back into Heaven. Jay and Silent Bob decide to go back to the Quick Stop.

As seen in Dogma.

June 1996: Bluntman and Chronic #3 is published.

This assumes that the title had a bimonthly run, and that Holden and Banky were working on the third issue during the events in Chasing Amy.

August 1996: The fourth and final issue of Bluntman and Chronic is published (Chronic's death). This puts an end to the plans for an animated series, as well as Holden and Banky's working relationship. After selling his share of the rights of the comics over to Banky, Holden moves out of their apartment while Banky continues to work with Contender on his own projects. Conjecture based on Chasing Amy.

Late 1996: Jay and Silent Bob order cable for Channel Surfers at Eden Prairie Mall, much to the annoyance of the sales clerk (who we discover in Jay and Silent Bob #1 is Roddy from Mallrats).

Jay and Silent Bob are asked to babysit Jay's niece in exchange for cheese sandwiches.

Steve-Dave and Walt Flanagan force Jay and Silent Bob out of Comicology for reading but not buying. The troublesome duo decide to watch some pornos.

All the events above are from the Jay and Silent Bob MTV shorts. This placement comes from the fact that Jay and Silent Bob are wearing the hats they got in the Jay and Silent Bob mini-series, thus these must occur some time after Dogma.

December 1996: Caitlin Bree is moved to the Marlboro Home For The Emotionally Troubled. Dante says this in Clerks (Holiday Special).

1997

March, 1997: Bethany Sloane gives birth to a baby girl who is now The Last Scion. Nine months from the end of Dogma.

April 1997: Holden McNeil does a self financed run on his personal comic Chasing Amy. Holden says he did a small print run a month ago in Chasing Amy.

Randal Graves and Dante Hicks try to invest in Star Wars action figures after Randal realizes that Steve-Dave and Walt are over charging at Comicology because of the successful re-release of the Star Wars trilogy in theaters. Randal prepares to make an offer to Frankie Howell who runs the stock room at Buy Me Toys; however, the endeavor is cut short by Jay and Silent Bob, who crash the meeting because all the people are buying action figures instead of [...].

Also, at some point before this, Shannon Hamilton escaped from jail and is now being hunted down via milk carton pictures, and Banky Edwards is seen at Eden Prairie Mall trying to pick up girls. All this is in Clerks (The Comic Book). There is no exact time reference in the comic, but it obviously takes place after the release of the Star Wars Special Editions which happened between January 31 and March 14, 1997.

May 1997: Banky Edwards and Alyssa Jones are guests at a New York comic con. Banky is promoting his new Baby Dave series, and Alyssa is enjoying success with Idiosyncratic Routine. They are both visited by Holden McNeil.

Alyssa also appears to now be dating the woman who manually masturbates caged animals from Clerks. Last scene in Chasing Amy (it says one year later).

1998

April 1998: The Easter bunny gets himself into a boat-load of trouble when his brother is killed while being experimented on at a cosmetics lab. As revenge, the Easter Bunny delivers Easter eggs filled with Ex-Lax to 13 company executives all of whom [...] themselves to death after eating the eggs. Santa Claus steps in to help, and he and his elves start to produce candy eggs for Easter. However, they encounter production and delivery problems that cause them fall a month behind in production of Christmas toys.

Around the same time, Santa gets a pretty young intern who loves to give head. Unfortunately, Mrs. Claus, who is not putting out like she used to, does not take kindly to Santa's new helper. Santa is forced to move Christmas gift production to 58A Leonard Avenue in Leonard, New Jersey (the apartment between RST Video and Quick Stop). Santa is only able to keep his worker elves appeased by buying them [...] from RST video. All this is described in Clerks (Holiday Special).

Early December 1998: In order to speed things up Santa hires Jay and Silent Bob to enter Christmas orders his computer. From Clerks (Holiday Special).

December 9, 1998: Minister Roy takes his congregation to a live taping of "Live With Regis and Kathie Lee." The Minister tells Dante about this in Clerks (Holiday Special).

December 16, 1998: Water-Chick with an 18 alternate pages comes out, the same day as Daredemon, written by some dickheadmovie-boy. Steve-Dave at Comic Toast only orders five copies of Daredemon and sells out all copies except for one on reserve for Brodie Bruce. From the opening scene in Clerks (Holiday Special).

December 22, 1998: Film producer Scott Mosier is arrested for [...]. From newspaper headline in Clerks (Holiday Special).

Randal Graves rents a copy of Sphincter Clause to a six year old boy instead of The Santa Clause. Assumes that the boy rented the film the day before the events in Clerks (Holiday Special).

December 23, 1998: Steve-Dave forces Walt to wrap presents for his mom. After insulting a young customer and discussing the state of the comics industry, Walt runs out of tape and the two are forced to venture over to Quick Stop.

At Quick Stop, Dante is talking with Minister Roy. The minister suggests that Dante visit people in the hospital. Meanwhile at RST video, Randal deals with an enraged mother, after which Randal is visited by Santa Claus (not that he knows it). Saint Nick orders some [...] for his elves and leaves.

After Dante and Randal finish work Dante informs Randal of his intent to collect on their 15-year-old bet over Randal's Mötley Crüe jacket. The two proceed to the Marina Diner, where Dante tells Randal that he is planning on visiting Caitlin. Randal suggests that Dante cain her (see the issue, I'm not explaining it), citing a Cousin Walter story to support his advice.

December 24, 1998: Dante leaves Vincent, Randal's rival for the video store job, in charge of Quick Stop while he goes to visit Caitlin. At the hospital, Dante actually tries caining Caitlin. While this does wake her from her coma, she is not happy, and Dante is forced to flee. While he was at the hospital, he caught glimpses of Willam from the mall (no, he has still not seen the sail boat), Oni Press publisher Bob Schreck (who is hospitalized because of stress over missing street dates), and comic artist Jim Mahfood.

Back at the stores Randal pays a visit to Santa's workshop between RST and Quick Stop. Santa informs him of how he came to be in New Jersey, and the two bump into Jay and Silent Bob. Santa also shows Randal a machine that can make any Christmas present required, naturally Randal asks for a Mötley Crüe jacket.

December 25, 1998: Dante returns to Quick Stop to find Randal outside and knocked out, with a note from Vincent explaining that he had to punch out Randal. It also seems that Santa was never an occupant of the space between RST and Quick Stop. Randal starts to question whether or not he dreamed the incident. However, when Jay walks by wearing a Mötley Crüe jacket, Randal is sure it was real. In the Christmas spirit, Dante lets Randal slide on their bet. All from Clerks (Holiday Special).

1999

Summer, 1999: Jay and Silent Bob take a trip to Hollywood, while on a tour at Sunrise Studios the pair catch sight of famous reporter Gale Weathers. This scene is from the film Scream 3, it seem to indicate that the Scream world and the Askewniverse are on the same plain of existence, but I don't have the time to research the horror trilogy so I'll have to leave it at that.

November, 1999: Randal and Dante discuss film's effect on society. This comes from Clerks in "On the Perils of Cinema" a comic strip that appeared on page 60 of November 1999's Talk magazine. There is no indication of a particular time for this story so I have simply placed it at its point of publication.

2000s

2000

May 10, 2000: Leonardo Leonardo opens the convenience store of the future the Quicker Stop across the street from the Quick Stop and even offers Randal and Dante jobs at the store. Later the pair decide to break into Leonardo's office. All in Clerks (the animated series) Episode 1. Unfortunately, this episode never aired so this is just a partial listing of these events based on flashbacks that occur in the second episode. Check back for a complete update on this story when the Clerks episodes are release on video.

May 16, 2000: Dante and Randal close the Quick Stop and leave it in a disaster state. After they depart the store is robbed.

May 17, 2000: Dante receives a call in the morning asking him to come because of the robbery.

At 11:59 am Randal arrives just as a locksmith is installing new locks, coincidentally, the locksmith's place was also broken into that night. While testing the new lock Randal and Dante lock themselves inside the freezer. They watch the customers steal and reminisce about past adventures and are later joined by Jay and Silent Bob both of who manage to lock themselves in the freezer too.

May 18, 2000: At around 3am Silent Bob manages to free the quartet from the freezer. Dante and Randal then promptly lock themselves in the video store, so the reminiscing continues. They not only recall all the celebrities they've met, but also the trips they've take including the two weeks in England, a trek to India, and of course the hospital burn ward. They also chat about the times they've tried living together. Once they split their apartment in half with a white line forgetting that they had a third roommate. Another time was when Randal got them kicked off of the Real World. Randal tried to start his own show with the store security camera but few people watched it.

Eventually Dante's mom notices that he hasn't come home. She calls the cops, who eventually find Dante and Randal locked in the store.

That night Dante and Randal recall the incident to their friends after a roller hockey game. All in Clerks (the animated series) Episode 2. There is no exact date given for this episode, so I just kind of back tracked from the sir date of the fourth episode, hopefully a more exact date will come from the video release of the remaining four episodes. Some events recalled in this episode like the trip and the time Randal and Dante lived together don't have an exact date so its hard to place them in the timeline, so for now I've listed them all in a group here.

May 24, 2000: Randal alerts the authorities about a Motaba Virus outbreak in Leonardo after meeting a caged monkey at the new pet store run by "Dirty Dancing's" Patrick Swayze. As the authorities quarantine the Quck Stop and RST Video, the "host monkey" escapes. Can Dante and Randal find the monkey in time to save Leonardo from complete eradication? Watch and see... This is the plot description of the third Clerks episode which never aired, I got this off the official page and it's the best I can offer right now in way of a timeline entry, sorry. Fuckin' Disney.

May 30, 2000: Randal hires a bouncer for RST Video.

May 31, 2000: After Randal complains about renting to three whole customers Dante challenges his fellow Clerk to open the Quick Stop, over the course of the conversation the pair take a rather disastrous turn at surgery.

June 1-2, 2000: While before opening Quick Stop at 7:59 am everything seems okay, everything goes to hell once Randal opens at 8:00 am. Dante quickly arrives to save his friend and the two clean the store. That is until Randal misses throwing a soda can in a trash bag just as Jay and Silent Bob enter, and Jay slips on the spilled soda. Enter a high powered lawyer. While he is reluctant to take Jay's case, he finally agrees to sue Dante Hicks and Quick Stop after Randal harasses him for over 24 hours.

June 5, 2000: Court is convened in the matter of "J" as in the letter J versus the Quick Stop, the honorable Judge Reinhold presides. After Dante's lawyer fails to show Randal takes over his case. The Jury consists of NBA all-stars who are sequestered over the course of the trial.

After court is adjourned and both parties are interviewed by the press, Dante and Randal visit Lando at the Junk Yard for advice on how to deal with an all black jury. He suggests that Randal try to relate to the jury.

That night members of WBA try to replace the missing NBA players in the all-star game.

June 6, 2000: After Randal insults the all black jury with his opening comments, he calls Dante to the stand. Dante is followed by surprise witness book store clerk Nicole Corwin (who knows Randal from when he was evicted from the mall book store).

After the prosecution plays the 911 tapes, Randal proceeds to call a series of filmmakers, and demand his eight bucks back for their film flops, Randal then rests his case.

Later at Quick Stop Randal receives a note to meet an informant in Washington DC. The informant proves to be worthless.''

June 7, 2000: Randal tries to call Silent Bob to the stand, but when Bob refuses to speak he is dismissed. The jury is left to deliberations.

That night all involved in the trial have a series of stress related nightmares.

June 8, 2000: The court reconvenes to hear the verdict, however, due to a shipping mistake with the script to this episode the actual ending to the trial is lost.

June 12, 2000: Judge Reinhold makes manager of Quick Stop. All in Clerks (the animated series) Episode 4. There is no exact date given for this episode, so I used the air date as a starting point. Hopefully once the unaired episodes are released I can make more exact placement.

One day an elderly Jay will write about the summer of 2000 before taking his granddaughter out for ice cream. He writes that Dante is married, Randal ends up owning the video store, a friend named Sketter is killed in Vietnam, and Silent Bob becomes Senator Robert Blutarsky. Shown in Clerks (the animated series) Episode 2.

2002
  • Randal Graves poses the question to Dante Hicks "What would you trade for a flying car?"
2003
  • Sometime in 2003: The Quick Stop/RST Video fire happens as a result of Randal Graves leaving the coffee pot on overnight. He and Dante get jobs at a Mooby's restaurant with Elias Grover.

As seen in the opening scene of Clerks II.

2004
  • Sometime in early 2004: The events of Clerks II occur.

From dialog spoken in Clerks II, it is apparent this takes place during 2004: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King has just swept the Oscars, Elias is excited for the upcoming Transformers movie that, according to him, isn't even begun filming yet but "will be awesome," and how the Star Wars prequel trilogy is doing so far. Randal gets into an argument with a customer who thinks that Hayden Christensen's portrayal of Anakin is terrible; to which Randal states that Episode Three will be better than all the other five films.
