Vicente Ábalos
José Vicente Ábalos Valderrama (1825–1892) was a Chilean lawyer and judge who served as president of the Supreme Court in 1891.
Judicial career
Ábalos pursued a career in the Chilean judiciary. On 23 October 1855, he was appointed a criminal judge in Santiago, a position he held until 1875.
During this period, Ábalos was appointed a member of the commission responsible for drafting a new Penal Code. His participation in the commission was brief, however, and he was replaced by Adolfo Ibáñez Gutiérrez.
Ábalos subsequently continued his judicial career and eventually became a justice of the Supreme Court of Chile.
In 1891, he became president of the Supreme Court, succeeding José Cousiño. His presidency coincided with the final months of the government of José Manuel Balmaceda and the political crisis surrounding the Chilean Civil War of 1891. He was succeeded by Gregorio Amunátegui Aldunate.
Ábalos died in 1892.
