Story of muthappan

Muthappan is a traditional hero who is now elevated to the status of a deity with a temple and daily worship. GeneRally the shrine of Muhappan is known as Madappura. According to the traditional faith mentioned in the songs, Muthappan has three three hundred and eight Madappuras at Kunnathur, Kuppan, Chandera, Kanhangad and Kuthuparamba are well known among them.

The shirnes of this deity have extended in South Malabar also. The household shrines of Muthappan are known as potikkalam.

The traditional story of muthappan is that he was born in Puralimala in the old Kottayam taluk of Malabar district. He was received by one Patikutti, a Thiyya woman, while she was bathing in Tiruvanchira. It appears that Muthapppan grew up to be a local hunter with immense magical powers and laer the status of a deity was attributed to him. However, there is another version. According to that version it is believed that Muthappan was born in Brahmin family and was excommunicated for his eating meat and drinking toddy. Neverthless, the first vesrion is more popular one. The story recollected in the folk song can be summarised as follows.

Padikutti with her seven maids went to Tiruvanchira for bathing. While she was in water she heard the tinkle of silver anklets and suddenly something like a golden peacock came under her hands. It was a boy! She presented the boy to the Ayyankara temple which is the abode of Kottiyur Siva. The God asked her AbOUT the boy. He further instructed her that if the boy was given elehant's milk he would have a face of and a body as strong as those of an elephant or if he was given horse milk he would have the strong face and body of a horse.

When grwon up, the boy asked his mother for a bow and arows. Then he hunted over hills and shot squirrels and doves and brought them near Ayyankara temple for cooking. The god of the temple was disturbed by the foul smell and complained to Patikkutti that her dear son made him vacate the temple.

Then the hunder soon looked at east and west with anger and he distant hill were melted. Then he looked at sounth and north and groves and trees were burned into ashes. Next he proceeded to the temple and shed the fire from his eyes. Seeing all these magical powers, Padikutti discarded her cruel son and asked him to go away to the high mountains. She put a curse as a result of which he lost his eye sight. He wore a blak loin cloth andput his long knife on his right side and with the black hunting dogs he separted.

After bathing he Tiruvanchira he placed his bow on the root of a palm tree and tied his dogs to the root of another tree. Then he climed upon a tapping palm tree and drank he sweet toddy. As he was on the tree, Chandan the toddy tapper came and finding a man on the tree he shouted. Chandan interrogated the man on the tree and threatened to shoot him down with his arrows. The hunter sharply gazed at Chandan and the latter was trasnformed into a statue without any sign of life.

the next day, chakki, the wife of Chandan, intrigued by his absence in the house approached the palm tree and found her husband in the form of a statue. She then looked on the rree and found a man there. She prayed öh hail thou, Muthappan, if Chandan had committed any offence I shall make penance for him. I shall arrange your favourite ayankutti, other offerings and Vellattam.

The god was pleased and converted the statue into former form of a living man. Chakki then presented the offerings as romised. The superman then visited Punnad and Kizhuritam. He is generally known as Puralimala Muthappan. The legendary figure was then worshipped by the people as deity.

The thottam of Muthappan Theyyam, only the story of hunting in the hills of Kunnthur is narrated. The super hunter along with other hunters and hunting dogs participated in a hunting and he shot a big pig with his arrows. The pig ran way with wounded arrows and fell down a a distant place. all the hunters divided its flesh among themselves but forgot to provide a share the man who shot it. When his share was provided bu taking from each share, he went to the fort of Perumvalli.

Muthappan is the ancestral deity of Tiyyas . They have four important Kazhagams or orgqanisations in Kolathnad. These Kazhagams must have originated in their early period of settlement in Kolathnad. In these Kazhagams the Teyyams of Muthappan is not performed as they are dominated by APoomala and other deities. Muthappan is not included among the 35 well known deities of Kolathiri kingdwom. This shows tghat Muthappan is later incorporation among the Teyyam deities.

How ever a local hunter hero of Puralimala became the deity of one sect of the community and later he came tobe revered and worshipped by thw whole community of Kolathnad. But Brahmins of the locality have no belief in this deity of the low caste community. In the case of many other deities of the area, an acculturation of Dravidian and Aryan concepts had taken place. But Muthappan still remains a deity of the communities traditionally occupying a lower poswition in the cast structure.
