Unlockar

Unlockar is a Mobile app start-up, headquartered in New Delhi, India. Unlockar is one of the nine finalists for the mBillionth Award South Asia 2014 in the m-Entertainment category.

History

Unlockar was founded by Pulkit Ahuja, a MBA from Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, Piyush Paul, an alumnus of FMS, Delhi, and Gopal Yadav and Manish Garg, both of whom are graduates from BITS, Pilani - Dubai Campus. The company began its operations in October 2013 as an app that rewards its users for using their mobile phones. It received its first round of funding within two weeks of its launch from GM Venture Partners.

Business Model

Unlockar started as an app that displayed social and local updates along with user opted content to its users directly on their phones' lock screen and rewarded them whenever they unlocked their phone. The app features a concept named as the uScreen.

uScreen

The uScreen is positioned as an alternative to the rather static and monotonous default lock screens that accompany android phones. uScreen displays user preferred content including trends, quotes, news, scores, weather updates, wallpapers, health and fashion tips, among others on the phone’s lock screen. The lock screen content is categorised into different channels – Incredible India, Who Said It!, ROFL, Fundoo Facts, Blast from the Past, Girl Gang, Bro Code, Wanderers for Life, Deals and Discounts and Mad about Ads. Users can subscribe to the channels of their choice and ensure a wholesome entertainment experience directly on their uScreen.

Reward System

Every time a person unlocks his phone by swiping on the uScreen, unlockar rewards him with either real money or uCoins (unlockar credits) which can later be cashed in at the shopping portal - the uShop. The uShop lets a person avail location based deals and discounts, buy products, get freebies and goodie bags, bid real time at ongoing auctions or donate to their preferred charity.
