University of Michigan Ballroom Dance Team

The University of Michigan Ballroom Dance Team was originally founded in late 1997 to provide students with an opportunity to compete in intercollegiate ballroom dancing competitions.

The Ballroom Dance Team won the Ohio Star Ball (a national collegiate level competition) in 2005, 2006, and 2007. The Team won the International Team Match in 2001 and 2002 and the American Team Match in 2001, 2003 and 2004 at the National Collegiate Championships in Ohio.

A pair from the Team won the 2006 National Collegiate DanceSport Championships - Standard, a competition of USA Dance DanceSport.1

The team currently has AbOUT 150 members, including 52 returning members and 90 newcommers.

Competition

In early February, the team hosts the largest collegiate hosted competition in the midwest. The competition draws in over 350 competitors and over 800 spectators. Every year, a professional ballroom dance couple comes to the competition to showcase and judge the final events of the competition. In the past, they have had such couples as Victor Fung and Anna Mikhead, Andrei Gavriline and Elena Kryuchkova, and this year they will have Arunas Bizokas and Katusha Demidova (National Standard champions from Ohio Star Ball) performing.
