Unionville public school

Unionville public school is an elementary school located in Unionville, Ontario, Canada. It is a school in the York Region District School board. The school’s name originated from the town, being one of the first schools built in Unionville in 1830.

History

Unionville’s one room schoolhouse was built in 1830 just north of present Unionville Public School. The school usually had 40 students and one teacher, though attendance back then was irregular because of extra help needed on the farm. The one room school was torn down in the 1860s, and in 1892 a new two-story school was built. In 1949 two new rooms were added and in 1955 a one-room annex was built. The two-story school was later torn down in 1977 to build the modern U.P.S.

Special Education Program

Unionville Public School’s largest program is the special education program. There are over four classrooms dedicated to helping kids with learning disabilities. Many of these students are also integrated into other classes to help them create a more positive learning environment. There also kids with physical disabilities that attend U.P.S, special transportation is arranged for these kids. U.P.S also has a room known as the S.S.C. (student support center), which provides a quite learning environment for student who require it.

Extracurricular programs.

Sports

Unionville public school offers many sports teams, for the junior and intermediate divisions. These include basketball, volleyball, track and field, and relay for both divisions, softball for the junior division, and badminton and soccer for the intermediate division. The school mascot is a bulldog, resulting to the team name Unionville Bulldogs. The bulldogs play against other York region schools in tournaments, which take place at elementary schools or high schools.

Music

Unionville public school has an elegent concert band which play at a B100 level is conducted by the head music teacher at U.P.S. The concert band has played in many festivals such as OBA and The Wonderland Festival. The school also has a jazz band which plays in Markville secondary’s Arts night and junk food & jazz.

Clubs

Unionville public also has a eco team, and a prefecting team.

Events

The school participates in the Terry Fox run and the Legacy run. It also has other events like grad fundraising, and bake sales to raise money for various things.
