Ultimate Abyss (Royal Caribbean)
Ultimate Abyss is a purple slide that is featured on Royal Caribbean International's . It is ten stories tall and it's the largest slide in a cruise ship. It features a purple Anglerfish at its entrance on Deck 16 and the slide ends at the boardwalk on Deck 6. The slide itself stretches to 216 feet and riders have to use a mat to ride it.
The Ultimate Abyss was first introduced on Harmony of the Seas when the ship debut and has been built onto every new Oasis class vessel since then.
History
The first Ultimate Abyss was built in 2016 with the Harmony of the Seas. Before then, Royal Caribbean vessels didn't come with a slide of any kind. Royal Caribbean's competitors, Carnival Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line had a waterside on most of their vessels, but Royal Caribbean's vessels haven't came with one. Rather than build one on the then-newest and largest vessel, Royal Caribbean decided to take a different direction and added a slide that took up what was unused room in the stern which also utilized tho support poles. Thus, the Ultimate Abyss was born.
When Harmony of the Seas debuted in 2016, the Ultimate Abyss was a instant success. In fact, Royal Caribbean installed one on Harmony's sister ship Symphony of the Seas. Ultimate Abyss is also to be built onto the Wonder of the Seas. Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, which were built first and are the first two vessels in the class, originally didn't have a Ultimate Abyss, but one was retrofitted onto Oasis of the Seas in 2019. Ultimate Abyss was also to be retrofitted onto Allure of the Seas in 2020, but plans for it's installation were delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ultimate Abyss only appears on the Oasis-class, the newer doesn't have a Ultimate Abyss. However, the Quantum-class does have North Star, a gondola suspended from a mechanical arm that swings out beyond the sides of the ship.
