Trinankur Bhattacharjee
Trinankur Bhattacharjee (born 2 January 1992) is an Indian student leader and political activist associated with the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). He has served as the state president of the West Bengal Trinamool Chhatra Parishad since 2018 and is among the longest-serving presidents of the organisation. Alongside his political career, he has pursued higher education in the sciences and management, having completed a master's degree in microbiology and a Master of Business Administration (HR), and is currently pursuing a PhD in conservation biology.
Early life and family background
Trinankur Bhattacharjee was born on 2 January 1992 in North Kolkata, West Bengal. He was brought up in Halishahar, located in the North 24 Parganas district.
He belongs to a family deeply rooted in cultural and intellectual pursuits. On his paternal side, the family traces a lineage connected with India’s freedom movement. His grandfather served as a high-ranking official in the Telephone Exchange, while his grandfather’s brother was a soldier associated with the Indian National Army led by Subhas Chandra Bose during the struggle for Indian independence. As the youngest child in the family, Bhattacharjee grew up in an environment enriched by diverse artistic and professional influences. His father, Tapas Bhattacharjee, is a chemist who runs a business in the chemical industry, while his mother, Rumita Bhattacharjee, is associated with music and has pursued singing. His eldest sister is a professional dancer.
His upbringing was also shaped by spiritual and traditional influences. The family’s ancestral residence at Khasbati in Halishahar houses a Twin Shiv Mandir, and the family has long been associated with a Kali Puja tradition of over 300 years, organised at their ancestral home.
Bhattacharjee’s childhood was marked by a close connection with the neighbourhood community. Much of his leisure time was spent playing football and cricket with local youngsters or engaging in fishing in the ponds of the locality, activities that formed an integral part of his early life.
Education
Bhattacharjee began his schooling at a renowned English-medium institution, where he studied up to Class IV. He later shifted to Halishahar High School, where he completed the rest of his schooling, passing the Madhyamik examination in 2007 and the Higher Secondary examination in 2009.
In 2009, he enrolled at Rishi Bankim Chandra College, Naihati, where he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology (Honours). He later completed his Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Microbiology from West Bengal State University. Alongside his scientific studies, he also obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Burdwan.
Bhattacharjee is currently pursuing a PhD in under Kazi Nazrul University.
Political career
Trinankur Bhattacharjee’s engagement with politics began at a remarkably young age. Although he grew up in a household that traditionally supported the Indian National Congress, his own political sensibilities gradually gravitated toward the ideology and mass movement of the All India Trinamool Congress. From as early as 2006, while still a school student, he began actively following and supporting the party, participating in political discussions, debates, and emerging digital political discourse. His formal political journey began in 2009 when he enrolled at Rishi Bankim Chandra College and joined the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad. What started as the enthusiasm of a young supporter soon evolved into a committed organisational role. His dedication, energy, and natural leadership quickly brought him recognition within the organization, where he demonstrated both administrative and organisational abilities while mobilizing the student–youth community.
Over time, he assumed several responsibilities within the movement—serving first as the Working President of the Halishahar Town Trinamool Chhatra Parishad and later as the President of the Rishi Bankim Chandra College TMCP unit. His growing reputation as an organiser led to his inclusion in the Core Committee of the Barrackpore Lok Sabha Trinamool Chhatra Parishad and subsequently to his appointment as the General Secretary of the North 24 Parganas District Trinamool Chhatra Parishad. In 2015, while pursuing his postgraduate studies at West Bengal State University, he became the Unit President of the WBSU Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, further consolidating his position in student politics. His continued organisational work and ability to mobilize students and youth across institutions eventually led him to state-level leadership when he was appointed General Secretary of the West Bengal Trinamool Chhatra Parishad.
In 2018, Bhattacharjee rose to the position of State President of the West Bengal Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, marking a significant milestone in his political journey. During his tenure he has worked to build goodwill among the student–youth community, emphasising organisational discipline and collective participation. As state president, he has organised and led various student movements and programmes across West Bengal, bringing forward a new generation of students and youth with interest and dedication in politics who are expected to contribute to the organisational strength of the All India Trinamool Congress in the coming decades. To strengthen the organisation at the grassroots level, he has travelled extensively across the state, visiting constituencies among the 294 Assembly constituencies of West Bengal. In his capacity as State President, he has personally visited nearly 90 percent of the colleges, universities, and higher educational institutions across the state, working to ensure the active functioning of TMCP units and helping to form organised committees within these institutions. Through these efforts, several students with a strong interest in political participation have emerged as new leaders within the student–youth organisation. He is among the longest-serving presidents of the West Bengal Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, having continued in the position for several years while maintaining a public record free from allegations of wrongdoing or corruption. He is contesting as All India Trinamool Congress candidate from Noapara vidhan sabha in 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election.
Alongside his organisational responsibilities, Bhattacharjee has also contributed to political documentation and writing. He has published a book called “Saathi” that documents the political journey of Mamata Banerjee beginning from her student life, along with various student-led protest movements across West Bengal organised by Trinamool Congress. The work serves as a record of student activism and the evolving political landscape of the state, particularly for young people interested in the political milieu of the All India Trinamool Congress.
Bhattacharjee has also played active roles in electoral processes in West Bengal, serving in responsibilities such as booth agent and counting agent in various elections. In the 2024 Indian general election, he was entrusted with organisational responsibilities in the Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency, where he worked as a key organisational strategist and monitored the smooth conduct of election-related activities in the region.
In addition, Bhattacharjee has been serving as a spokesperson of the party for the past five years, regularly participating in media discussions and political debates. Known for his witty, eloquent, and persuasive style of speaking, he has become a visible presence in television debates as well as digital media platforms. His ability to clearly annotate complex political issues and dissolve intricate political knots into accessible explanations has made his interventions effective in media discussions, podcasts, interviews, and political commentary circulated through YouTube videos and social media content.
Personal life and interests
Apart from his political engagements and academic pursuits, Bhattacharjee maintains an active interest in sports and cultural activities. From an early age, he has been closely associated with outdoor sports, particularly cricket and football, which he both plays and follows. He is also an enthusiastic chess player and has represented his institution in competitive tournaments. During his college and university years, he participated in the East Zone Inter-University Chess Competition on multiple occasions and served as the University Chess Team Captain. Over the course of his academic career, he competed in the East Zone tournaments around five times and was honoured with the distinction of University Blue for his sporting achievements. In addition to his own participation, he actively encourages and promotes sports activities among young people in his community.
Bhattacharjee also has a strong interest in music, particularly Bengali contemporary and band music. He listens to bands such as Fossils, Cactus, Mohiner Ghoraguli, and Taalpatar Shepai. Among individual artists, he follows the works of Kabir Suman, Anjan Dutt, Nachiketa Chakraborty, Rupam Islam, and Anupam Roy.
In addition to music, he has an interest in Bengali, Hindi, and English cinema, along with web series and documentaries. He particularly enjoys films and documentaries that explore political history, social movements, and cultural narratives. In his leisure time, he often listens to podcasts on politics, sports, and spirituality, and follows discussions that analyse contemporary public affairs and historical developments.
Apart from media and music, Bhattacharjee is also inclined towards reading political biographies, historical accounts, and writings on public policy and leadership, which complement his interest in political life and public discourse. He occasionally spends time engaging in discussions with friends and colleagues on politics, sports, and social issues, reflecting his continued interest in intellectual exchange beyond formal political work.
