Trevor Dougherty
Trevor Dougherty is a citizen journalist with CNN's iReport program, and also a YouTube Partner. Since 2008, his short videos and advocacy work have been featured frequently by international media networks. In 2011, Dougherty represented the Global Changemakers network as the youngest American ever selected to participate at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Biography
Born into an international family, Dougherty grew up in three continents (North America, Europe, and Africa), four countries (United States, United Kingdom, South Africa, and Swaziland) and five U.S. states (Colorado, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, and New Mexico). He started posting videos online under the pseudonym "maddogza" in 2007 and was YouTube's youngest "guest editor," moderating YouTube's featured videos for several days, before becoming one of the first official members of YouTube's Partner Program. In 2008, Dougherty used social networking to organize a world record attempt in Ithaca, New York, forming the world's largest human peace sign with 5,814 people. During the 2008 U.S. Presidential Elections, he was discovered by CNN I-Report when he uploaded videos from the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Since then, close to 100 of his reports have been used in CNN's coverage of world news and events. In 2009, Dougherty enrolled as a Davis Scholar at the Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa in Swaziland, one of thirteen international schools which strive to "make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future." Dougherty completed his International Baccalaureate Diploma in Swaziland in November, 2010.
Recognition
Dougherty is recognized as a youth leader by Youth Service America and the British Council as part of the "Service Stars" and "Global Changemakers" programs, respectively. He is the winner of the Stanford Peace Innovation Prize, and several other video competitions. His first viral video, Stand Up for World Peace, was nominated "Most Inspirational Video of the Year" in the 2007 YouTube Awards and his report on changes to Facebook's design and layout was nominated for "Best CNN iReport of the Year" in 2008.
