Top 1000 Scientists: From the Beginning of Time to 2000 AD is The Title of a book (ISBN 18-5776-405-6), penned by Philip Barker. It carries a foreword by Professor Ludmilla Jordanova, then President of the The British Society for the History of Science The book explains that Mr. Barker polled people at 80 universities to determine which names should be included in the list. The results of the survey, the names of 1037 scientists with a minimum of 42 votes, Appear below in alphabetical order (by last name).

While this is the first international attempt to identify top scientists involving many universities , the author in his preface admits:

While it could not be said with authority that these names represent the top 1000 in science, any attempt to identify the scientific leaders would be incomplete without these superstars of science.

67 of the 80 universities polled were in English-speaking countries and 30% of the scientists in this list are from the United Kingdom and another 22% from the United States.
