Tong Kooi Ong is a Malaysian business magnate.
Career
Of Malaysian Chinese heritage, Tong is regarded as one of the most prolific businesspeople in the region, he is the Co-Chairman of Asia Inc., hails from Malaysia and is a businessman with interests in media, technology and other businesses in the region. He also has business holdings in Canada, with interests media, property development, finance, and building materials. He is a former stockbroker, financial analysy and banker who built one of the most successful financial and banking groups in Malaysia called PhileoAllied Berhad. Phileo Allied Berhad, before it was merged as part of Malaysia's banking consolidation policy. He is also the CEO of Nexnews Berhad, a media group listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. The most prominent titles of the Nexnews media group are The Edge Malaysia, the number one business weekly in the country, and The Sun, the second leading English daily newspaper by circulation. In the region, his media interests are represented by The Edge Asia Inc, which publishes The Edge Singapore, a business weekly, Asia Inc, the regional monthly, and other personal finance titles.
Overseas business interests
Tong is a leader of The Edge Communications, Malaysia’s bestselling weekly business and investment newspaper, and The Edge Publishing Pte Ltd is a publishing house that distributes its sister paper in the Singapore region. In Canada, he is the Chairman of Taiga Building Products Limited, listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, it is a business distributes building products and materials for real estate construction.
Education
Mr Tong obtained his BA in Business Administration in 1981 and MA in Economics and Finance in 1984 both from Simon Fraser University, Canada. He is actively involved in the British Columbia business community and is a member of the SFU Business Management of Technology Business Council. He was recently awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree by his alma mater.
