Tommy Vickers
Tommy Vickers was an African-American who died in April 1972 while in custody of Lake County, FL SHERIFF Department. Vickers was from South Florida and received a ticket while passing through Lake County. Sheriff Willis V. McCall was indicted and suspended from office by then-Governor Reubin Askew. McCall was accused of kicking Vickers to death in a holding cell for not passing a beverage cup back to one of his guards. McCall was acquitted by an all-white jury in Ocala, FL after napping and doing crossword puzzles in court during the trial.
