Toby Christian
Toby Christian (born Lincolnshire, 1983, UK) is an artist based in London.
His largely sculptural practice employs a very wide range of materials . Christian's experimental approach includes series of works such as Appendages, in which Christian CREATES marble fingers, toes, ears and noses, carved to give the appearance of having been smashed from an out-of-sight original. Other projects include high gloss bulges (Block works), which protrude through architectural openings to create the appearance of a mass of material expanding within a room. Christian's recent Rudder series shows monochrome paintings hung deliberately askew .
After graduating from Wimbledon College of Art in 2007, Christian was included in '4 New Sensations', an exhibition of 20 graduates organised by the Saatchi Gallery and Channel 4. In 2008 he won the inaugural 'Noble Prize for Sculpture' and was included in 'ArtFutures 2008', organised by The Contemporary Art Society, London 1 (Christian was made an Artist Member in 2009) 2 . He has since exhibited in numerous exhibitions internationally such as 'You Know I Know He Knows We Know' at Aeroplastics Contemporary, Brussels 3, 'Deserter' at Gallery-33, Berlin 4, 'Presque Rien II' at Laure Genillard Gallery, curated by Cedric Christie and Gavin Turk, London, 'Psychedelia Paradise' at EXPRMNTL Galerie, Toulouse 5 and 'Video in Foco/Photo in Foco' at Galeria Baró Cruz, São Paolo, Brazil . In May 2009 his first solo exhibition "Stage Hands" was exhibited at Fold Gallery 6, London.
