  • The hard rock group The Who releases the concept album Tommy, about a deaf, dumb and blind boy who wins a mass following after becoming a pinball guru. The album's consistent themes, plot, story and interlinking songs set the template for many other hard-rock artists to attempt such concept albums.
  • Deep Purple's lead singer Rod Evans is fired after the recording of the Deep Purple, and is replaced by Ian Gillan. The band's bass guitarist Nick Simper will by next to be replaced by Roger Glover on the demand on Ian Gillan.
  • Guitarist Randy Holden leaves Blue Cheer after reccording 3 titles of the New! Improved! album. He is replaced by Bruce Stephens.
  • Due to disagreements with John Kay, lead guitarist Michael Monarch leaves Steppenwolf after the release of the At Your Birthday Party album. He will be replaced later on by Larry Byrom.
