Think You Can Drive
Think You Can Drive is an annual charity event designed to highlight road safety in the South West of England and specifically Cornwall where fatalities and casualties from dangerous driving increased markedly over the last few years.
Overview
In 2006 Nigel Hudson of Truro Rotary Club wanted to create a way of educating young people AbOUT the consequences of dangerous driving as levels of young fatalities on Cornish roads had increased dramatically in recent years. He wanted drivers to realize and garner a new respect for the road, the safety of other road users and The Effects that dangerous driving can have.
In collaboration with Truro Rotary Club, Nigel obtained further support from Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, Cornwall County Fire Brigade and Cornwall Council.
All were agreed that the level of collisions on Cornish roads were at an unacceptable level and so an aim of saving one young life through teaching was considered. This led to the idea of creating an event which would provide education combined with entertainment so appealing to the demographic.
It quickly became evident that dangerous driving was an issue of importance to many people across Cornwall and soon many participants were involved.
As the event grew it became clear that road accidents were not only rising in the younger age bracket but also among an older generation of born again bikers men in their late thirties and up who were unaware of the power and capabilities of their motorcycles. So the event has tried to cater to a wider audience for Maximum Impact.
It is hoped that the event can be used nationwide as both an educational tool and a way to raise money for charity.
