The Young Offenders Institute
The Young Offenders Institute are a five-piece rock band from the neglected council estate of Collyhurst in North Manchester who attract notoriety at every turn. Their name is GeneRally presumed to refer to the criminal past of the band members, while the band themselves have claimed it came AbOUT because "that's where people used to say we would end up". Live reviewers have found them shambolic and inspired in equal measure, as you might expect from a band who have supported fellow Mancunians the Happy Mondays and The Fall. The New MusicAL Express once flagged up a live review of the band on its cover with the headline "The band who make Babyshambles look like James Blunt". The scrapbook on their website features sporadic handwritten contributions from the band, as "none of them have internet access". They were one of only two acts released on Factory Records founder Anthony H Wilson's F4 Records with their limited EDition single We're The Young Offenders. Their first single proper is due to be released in summer 2006 on The New Black Corporation, The song is also featured on 'Saints Row' game on the Xbox 360.
