The Vinyl Skyway
The Vinyl Skyway is a contemporary American rock band. A founding member of the popular alt-country band 'Lemonpeeler', Michael Hayes began collaborating with multi-instrumentalist and composer Andrew Santospago and formed 'The Vinyl Skyway' in 2003.
Their eponymous debut was released independently in 2004.
Personnel include drummer Booth Hardy, bassist Rob Pevitts, guitar demon Tony "Speedy" Rovello, and singers Kelly Ann McCann and Angela Valley.
The band's style can be described as indie-pop with deep roots-rock influences. Michael Hayes' strong, unique voice adds interest to his already-interesting lyrics. The Vinyl Skyway sound features melancholic songs with beautiful melodies, complex harmonies, shimmery guitars and a solid rhythm section. They have been compared to Alex Chilton, the Flying Burrito Brothers, the Smiths, the Beatles, the Jayhawks, Wilco, Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys and Crowded House.
The name Vinyl Skyway was derived from a song by Paul Westerberg (former lead singer of the Replacements) called "Skyway." Michael Hayes was raised in the frigid twin cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota where skyways are common (connecting buildings to protect from the cold). It is also a reference to the vinyl LP, a wonderful medium that is sadly near extinction.
The Vinyl Skyway perform most frequently in Cambridge, Massachusetts, though have recently made appearances on the West coast in San Francisco.
The band's latest album is 'From Telegraph Hill', released by Vinyl Skyway Music in January 2007.
