The Shire is located in the village of Carleton, Nova Scotia, Canada.

The Shire is situated upon 165 acres of land in Yarmouth County, fronting Mink Lake. The land is a mixture of streams, meadow, wetland and Acadian forest. There are a series of interconnected hiking trails, gardens, organic agriculture and environmentally sustainably constructed facilities and sports activities for groups.

The purpose of The Shire is to be a gathering ground for the study and practice of how to build a sustainable human future.

The Shire is notable for its hosting of diverse ideological guests, including "The Berkana Institute","Pioneers of Change" and, annually "The Art of Hosting" (AOH). It serves as a neutral ground for the exploration of all possibilities that any can offer.
