History

The Greek-Catholic Church from Boian

According to a publication issued by the Romanian Church United with Rome, Greek-Catholic and printed in 1900, The Greek – Catholic parish from Boian was a medium parish taking into account its parishioners. In 1930 the United Church brings out another publication which mentions a nice number of parishioners. It is also mentioned that there is an old church situated in the village cemetery, a vicarage and a nice piece of land.

In the autumn of 1948 things change radically because of the fact that starting with that autumn, Greek – Catholic religion was abolished and the lands were confiscated by the Romanian state ruled by the communists. The vicarage was sold to a natural person and the church was demolished because it reached an advanced state of degradation.

The re-establishment of the Boian parish after the 1989 revolution, took place in 1996, under the direct supervision of Pr. Mons. George Surdu, former rector of Greek-Catholic Mission in Paris, son of the village Boian, and with the fraternal support of Pr. Muntean Ioan, then the archpriest of Mediaş.

The first Holly Liturgy took place on 31st May 1998. Pr. Mons. G.Surdu, Pr. Muntean Ioan, Archpriest Moldovan Leon, Pr. Hang, Pr. Puiu and Pr. Hrisca Ilie, the administrator of Velt parish who took care of this parish for about one year, were all present at the first Holly Liturgy.

At the beginning this parish had a number of 34 parishioners, but as time went by, God wanted to increase their number through their return to the abandoned faith. 30 children have been baptized since the re-establishment of our parish.

In 1999 the parish got a priest of its own. Priest Bogdan Adrian came for the first time in April and the appointment act was read by Archpriest Muntean Ioan.

The foundation stone of the new church was laid on 8th September in the autumn of the same year. Among those who participated in this event were: IRSS Lucian Mureşan, PSS George Gutiu, the Archpriest of Mediaş, a group of priests and the chorus of the Greek-Catholic parish from Mediaş together with an impressive number of people not only from the village.

Until the autumn of 2001 all the liturgies took place in an improvised chapel in a house bought for the parish by Pr. Mons. On 2nd September 2001 the new church was sanctified in the presence of IPSS Lucian Mureşan, Archpriest Farcas Ioan, Archpriest Ciulea Vasile, Archpriest Muntean Ioan, Pr. Bogdan Adrian together with a group of priests. The great absent was Pr. Mons. Surdu, who passed away in the spring of the same year and who deserves to be called the founder of this church.

Today the parish has 189 parishioners among which 23 children. These children are taught religion at the local school by Pr. Bogdan. Each year for Easter or Christmas, celebrations involving children are prepared in our church for the joy of our parishioners.

Today we pray for Pr. Victor Almăşan, the last united priest from Boian before the communist period, Pr. Mons. George Surdu, who helped and supported his native village and his dear Church, as predecessors worthy of praise and memory and we thank God that the Greek-Catholic Church from Boian was and still is a holly place through which God descends on Earth among the people and for the people. ro:Biserica greco-catolică din Boian
