The Rod Ryan Show
The Rod Ryan Show is a weekday morning show on KTBZ-FM in Houston, Texas. The show airs live Monday through Friday from 6:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. CST, but also replays on The Rod Ryan Show channel on iHeartRadio for 24 hours. It’s hosted by Rod Ryan, co-hosted by Dinah Powers and Alex P. Middleton with producer Phyllis Vengeancee.
History
The Rod Ryan Show debuted as an afternoon show on July 11, 1995 on WEDG in Buffalo, New York. In 1996, the show moved to New Orleans, Louisiana and aired on KMEZ (formerly KKND) from 1996 to 1999 in the afternoons and from 2000 to 2003 in the mornings. Currently, the show airs on KTBZ-FM 94.5 The Buzz in Houston, Texas since January 2, 2004. The Rod Ryan Show aired simultaneously in New Orleans for several years after Hurricane Katrina.
Rod Ryan
Rodney Ryan was born on August 26, in North Tonawanda, New York. Ryan graduated from Buffalo State College with a degree in Broadcasting and is an American radio personality as well as disc jockey. [2]
Features and Games
The Fresh Out of Bed, Head to Head Challenge is played daily around 6:20 AM with two callers. The callers to say their name when they think they know the answer to questions read by Rod Ryan. The caller to say their name first is called on to answer the question, but if the caller is unable to answer or gets the question wrong the other caller is given a turn to answer. The first caller to answer two questions right is “The Fresh Out of Bed, Head to Head Daily Champion” and is brought back the next day to play again. There is a daily prize for the winner. When a caller wins five consecutive days they are then moved to “Captain Cash’s Garage” to wait for the end of the year game where all of the year’s winners play against each other until one winner is left and is named "The Fresh out of Bed, Head to Head Hall of Fame Champion" of that year.
Read My Lips requires two callers and the first caller chooses from co-hosts Dinah and Alex for their team. The second caller is assigned the unchosen co-host. The co-host wears a set of headphones with loud music to drown out any sounds while Rod Ryan speaks words or phrases to them in which they have to guess what is being said. Both co-hosts are given three words or phrases and the co-host with the most correct answers wins. There is a prize awarded to the caller with the winning co-host. This game is usually played weekly.
Free Beer Friday is where a case of beer is given away at the beginning of every hour during the show’s air time on Fridays to the first caller of the hour.
[...], Jail, Blood or Fame is where listeners call in to the show on Mondays to discuss their weekend shenanigans and encounters with freaky unordinary [...], arrest, bloody injuries or meeting a celebrity.
Don’t be a pig! is where the callers try to guess at the hits Rod gives them about an item or thing. The hits sound dirty, but aren’t what they seem. This game is played occasionally and a prize is given to the caller that correctly guess the item.
What’s in Dinah’s Box? is where Dinah places an item in a small box and callers try to guess what’s in the box. The caller is allowed to ask one yes or no question about the item. If the answer to the caller’s question is yes, then the caller is able to guess what is in the box. This continues until a caller gets the item right. This game is played occasionally and a prize is given to the caller that correctly guess the item.
Who’s chewing those chips? is where Rod, Dinah, Phyllis and Alex chew chips one at a time and callers try to guess which cast member is chewing the chips. The caller must get two consecutive guesses right to win a prize.
BeanBoozled is a game where the Rod, Dinah, Phyllis and Alex randomly eat a jelly bean from a Jelly Belly BeanBoozled package that contains regular jelly beans and crazy flavors, like spoiled milk, dead fish, rotten egg, barf and moldy cheese. This game is played for fun and does not require callers or prizes.
Gender Bender Game is where Rod, Dinah, Phyllis and Alex try to guess the [...] of callers who try to disguise their voice by asking the caller questions. If the hosts guess the wrong [...] the caller gets a prize and this game is played with multiple callers.
Hair or Bare is where three female callers disclose to the Rod off the air whether they are hair or bare in their nether region. Another caller is the main player and asks the female callers one yes or no question each. After asking all of the questions the main player must guess which female callers are hair or bare and must get two correct to win a prize. This game is played occasionally.
Ball Gag Dinah is where Dinah says famous movie lines with a ball gag in her mouth while callers try to guess the line. Callers must get two lines correct to win a prize. This game is play occasionally.
Mile of Meat is where the show picks twenty-five eligible bachelors who apply to be setup on a blind date for Valentine’s Day. On Valentine’s Day the show broadcasts from a busy popular street with the twenty-five bachelors lined up along the road side with numbered shirts. Then single female listeners are encouraged to drive by to view the bachelors and call the show to convince Rod and Dinah why they should be setup on the blind date with one of the bachelors. The numbered shirts the bachelors wear make it easier for the Rod and Dinah to know which bachelor the single female callers are inquiring about.
Labor Day Pregnant Bikini Contest is held the weekend before Labor Day with pregnant contestants that must be in their third trimester to compete. The contest received worldwide recognition in the most recent years.
The Vibo 500 is a contest between four and five callers who display the strength of their vibrator [...] toy by turning it on over the listening part of the phone. Rod and Dinah then pick the most powerful sounding vibrator as the winner. The winner is awarded a prize. This game is usually played before the Indy 500, but is also played occasionally.
The Granny Game is played between three callers. The callers are required to contact their grandmothers live on the air. The caller has a limited amount of time to get their grandmother to say the word boner as many time as possible. The grandmother that says the word the most is winner and awarded a prize. This game is usually played before the Grammy Awards, but is also played occasionally.
How would you bang? is played with a couple. One of the callers is asked the following three questions. Which family member of your partner would you bang? Which friend of your partner would you bang? Which celebrity would you bang? Then the other half of the couple is asked to answer the questions as they think their partner answered the questions. A prize is awarded to the couple if they get two out of three questions the same. This game is played occasionally.
Awards and Fundraising
The Rod Ryan Show raised over $1.7 million for various charities such as Houston Food Bank, AIDS Foundation Houston, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston Children's Charity and the Rod Ryan Show backpack program. In recognition of shows charitable contributions Houston’s Mayor Annise Parker named May 14, The Rod Ryan Show Day, on May 14, 2013.
