The Richmond State

The Richmond State was a free weekly newspaper published in Richmond, Virginia from 1994 to 1996. The publication was intended to compete with other "alternative" Richmond publications such as Style, delivering original cultural content to an upscale readership. Its weekly circulation was approximately 10,000. Its content was syndicated to publications including the Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Examiner, New York Daily News, Boston Phoenix, San Francisco Chronicle, Detroit Metro Times, Sacramento News and Review, and the Illinois Times.

It began publishing in October 1994, with a mission statement of "We hope that each week we can continue to try to uncover the Virginia we know and love. For it is this blessed state, and her people, that sustain us." The Newspaper ceased publication in 1996.
