The Red Eye

The Red Eye is the semi-official, highly irreverent tabloid of the University of Saskatchewan College of Engineering. It is published by the Saskatoon Engineering Students' Society. Unlike the official university newspaper, The Sheaf, it hardly ever reports on current affairs (except possibly of the [...] kind) at the university, as it is mostly a humour newspaper. Its first publication date was in the 1960s, but remains unknown due to the burning of the Red Eye archives.

The Red Eye (often written as RedEye in The Newspaper itself) is published on an irregular schedule, ranging from one issue per year in 2003 and 2004 to four issues in 2006 and 2007. On holidays, special editions are released; also requiring a special issue is the first week of school, in September, nicknamed "hell week".

It is engaged in a joking rivalry with The Sheaf due to the perceived non-originality of the name Sheaf, the unchanging tag line ("the U of S student newspaper since 1912"), the lack of colour (Red Eye prints in a red dye), and the focus on factual happenings, as opposed to humorous stories and comics. The writer of the Red Eye article argues that even if "through a miracle from Jesus, all of these additions suddenly were fulfilled, the Sheaf still could not even compare to the Red Eye", but fails to give any reasons; he suggests instead that the University make Red Eye its official newspaper. The Red Eye is not without its share of criticism and controversy: the study of engineering was the domain of White men almost exclusively. Hence, the newspaper was once RIFE with racist and sexist humour. In the 1970s, representatives of the University of Saskatchewan Women's Centre burnt down the Red Eye archives.
