The Real Alice in Wonderland (book)
The Real Alice in Wonderland - A Role Model for the Ages is a comprehensive biography AbOUT the life of Alice Pleasance Liddell, who was the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865), and the sequel, Through the Looking Glass (1871). The Real Alice in Wonderland has been written by the children’s author, C. M. Rubin, and her daughter, Gabriella Rubin. Alice Liddell was C. M. Rubin’s great aunt’s aunt. The authors assembled over 500 illustrations and photographs depicting the life and times of Alice Pleasance Liddell, as well as art inspired by Alice and her namesake, Alice in Wonderland. The book recounts the dramatic saga of Alice Liddell, the creative, curious, and magnetic girl who became the muse for Lewis Carroll and grew up to become a widely loved and respected cultural icon, both in England and around the world. The story of Alice’s life is marked by obsessive love by the men in her life, multiple tragedies in her immediate family, her great personal courage during World War I and the Great Depression, and her dedication to her family and her country throughout.
In 2006, C. M. Rubin and Gabriella Rubin began a project to create the first comprehensive book about the original Alice in Wonderland's life. Their work included the assembly of photographs spanning two centuries, securing contributions of Alice in Wonderland artwork form many well known artists (such as Vik Muniz, Annie Liebovitz, Mark Steele, Lizzy Rockwell, Helen Oxenbury, Frances Broomfield, David Cooper and Tom Otterness), and obtaining graphic and written materials from numerous museums, libraries and schools around the world. The Real Alice in Wonderland story is told using a unique collection of pictures along with prominent voices from Liddell’s lifetime and from the present day.
There are over 1000 books, films, operas, plays and video games based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice's Adventures In Wonderland. It is estimated that over 7 billion people have seen or read the book. One of the central premises of The Real Alice in Wonderland is that Alice Liddell was directly or indirectly the original inspiration for much of this, and accordingly, she deserves a significant place in history. The book develops the theme that behind every great person there is the person who inspires and believes in him, and who motivates him to realize his dreams. The book’s dedication reads: The Real Alice In Wonderland "is dedicated to all those who inspire the minds and souls of human beings". It raises the question: what does it mean to inspire?
