The Public Works comic strip presents a comedic look into the lives of some very colorful public works employees and their dysfunctional workplace. It capitalizes on the stereotypes thought to exist in a public works departments across the world.
The cast members are self centered, lazy, incompetent, overpaid, and would not survive in the private sector. As a result, these misfits provide fodder for the comic strips’ humorous story lines. This weekly feature has been called the Dilbert of the public works world.
Setting
The strip is set in a fictional public works department of a mid-sized U.S.city. Management is depicted in typical office settings. Union members are typically found working in city laborer settings, such as hauling garbage, repairing streets, etc. as well as in comedic union meetings. The location of the city in which The Public Works is set, experiences seasons such as those in the Mid-Atlantic states of the U.S.
Cast Of Characters
Management
Ms. Frost
(Vice-President): Ms. Frost is the highest ranking person at the Public Works. She is a portrayed as a man-hater. Her only use for men is in roles of servitude. She is a clever and sly as a fox and that’s why her character is drawn as such. Ms. Frost is also portrayed as having a very ice like personality. She was hired to make changes at the Public Works, but has become part of the problem.
Mr. Bickerman
(Manager): A manager with the Public Works. Before being employed by the company, Mr. Bickerman was living on the streets. He has a mean, arrogant, and condescending personality. Mr. Bickerman’s primary goal is to instill fear in his subordinates. He’s said to have honed his managerial style back in the 6th grade as the class bully who took your lunch money, ate your snack and still beat you up in case you were thinking of telling your parents.
Vern
(Supervisor): Vern is a supervisor at the Public Works. He is by far the laziest and most arrogant of all the cast members. Vern was originally a Union Member and quickly advanced to the role of supervisor. When in the Union, he earned the nickname “Fern” because he is as intelligent and personable as a houseplant. Vern feels the only way to advance is by tearing everyone else down.
Safety Sam
(Safety Supervisor): As safety supervisor his primary duty involves creating a safe work environment for all the characters. Although he is quick to write union members up an infraction, readers get the sense he really believes in what he’s doing and is not a bad guy at heart.
Union
Alex
Union President: Alex currently serves in the role of Union President. He is portrayed as a beacon of light shinning in the darkness…An oasis in the desert…A voice of reason in the mixed up world of the Public works. As union president he’s always trying to steer his union brothers in the right direction; but that’s a tough thing to do when you’ve lost your own way.
Ernie
(Union Member): IBS, ADD, OCD, ABCDEFG…it’s easy to get lost in all those acronyms. Ernie likes to tell people he’s been diagnosed with all these disorders. Real or imagined, Ernie is as soft as a pillow but not nearly as cool.
Lonny
(Union Member): Lonny quickly earned the name “Z-man” for his ability to take a nap anywhere and anytime, even in the middle of a job. He talks like he has a mouth full of marbles and smells like he just drank a six-pack of beer. But readers who look past all that realize Lonny can be a pretty good friend, as long as you’re willing to give him a ride home at the end of the day.
Albert
(Union Member): Albert is focused on making money any way he can. His insatiable desire for wealth that ruined his family life. However it did help him buy that beach house he always wanted. Too bad he’ll never enjoy it…his wife got it in the divorce.
Gus
(Union Member): Spam, is one of Gus’ favorite foods. Add it to a can of stew, along with anchovies, and you’ve just created his perfect meal (as well as contributed to the world’s natural gas deposit). Gus is a little odd and a little off, but you’ll never have to watch your back when he’s around, unless of course your back is covered with chocolate syrup.
Style
The strip is drawn in great detail and appears in colour. Though the characters are animals, they are fully equipped with items such cars, cell phones, computers, construction equipment, and other items which are all drawn very realistically.
The strip is serialized with the story’s running over multiple weeks on some occasions.
The Sunday strip is in a two tiered format with a large logo panel appearing on the left of the strip.
The strip's characters are misfits that could not survive in the private sector. Some are lovable, others you’ll love to hate.
The strip's humor is aimed more at adults, with frequent lampoons of real public works environments. Managers manage with the belief that union members are always trying to game the system and thus must be supervised like children. The union members typically live sheltered lives and see the world thru a very unique prizm. In one comic strip, Ms. Frost is looking for a way to monitor union personnel at all times. The suggestion adopted is to inject the union members with LoJack like tracking devices thru company sponsored flu shots. In another comic its discovered that over the years the union members have used the same type of excuse as the for the reason on the job injuries. The punch line is that when union members get injured on personal time, they simply sneak back to work, and report they were injured on the job, in order to continue collecting their full paycheck.
