The Mendenhall Mall
The Mendenhall Mall is one of two shopping malls located in Juneau Alaska. The other major mall is called the Nugget Mall. The Mendenhall Mall is on Mendenhall Mall Road between Mendenhall Loop Road and Riverside Road in Juneau, Alaska. The mall contains businesses that provide services such as hair and nail salons. It also houses a few restaurants. There are virtually no retail businesses in the mall, earning it the nickname "Ghost Mall" by local residents. The majority of the retail spaces for rent have been vacant for many years. In 2006 the mall was sold to an outside investment group, Salmon Creek, LLC. Tenancy in the mall has declined since the sale with only two major retailers left. In 2007 the mall received a new paint job. While this improved the appearance of the mall exterior, it did not attract any more businesses to the mall.
The Mendenhall Mall contains the Mendenhall branch of the Juneau Public Library. Many businesses have noted that it is impossible to operate a book store (or any business that sell books or magazines) next a to a free, public, tax-funded library, further discouraging any businesses from the Mendenhall Mall.
