The Lagoons is a real-estate development that is under construction in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is situated along Dubai Creek, near Ras Al Khor Road.

Purpose

The Lagoons area will cover an area of 70 million square feet (6.5 million square meters). Seven artificial islands, which will each be linked to each other, will consist of residential apartments, shopping malls, office buildings, five-star hotels, resorts, a museum, marinas, and Dubai's first opera house.

The project's cost is estimated to be around AED 80 billion (US$ 25 billion). It will be developed by the real estate firm Sama Dubai. Groundbreaking and soil-testing will commence in late 2008 while the finished project is due for completion between 2010 and 2011.

Al Dana

The business heartland of Dubai, Al Dana will be defined by the presence of blue chip businesses and executive style living.

Al Sedaifa

Al Sedaifa will be a high fashion district home to numerous clothing boutiques, jewelery stores and interior design firms.

Al Jiwin

Al Jiwin will be the social hub of the lagoon.

Al Hassabi

Al Hassabi will be a mixture of residential complexes and parkland's with many waterways and healthy living features such as walkways and cycling paths.

Al Naama

Al Naama will be a 'Health and Mind' district with health clubs, gyms and spas as well as museums and art centers.

Al Lulu

Al Lulu will be an exclusive gated community with waterfront views of The Lagoon.

Dubai Opera House

Home of Dubai’s only opera house, a truly iconic building with internationally recognized architecture where world class performers are set to take the stage.

Dubai Towers Dubai

The Lagoons will also showcase the Dubai Towers Dubai skyscraper complex. This development will include four mixed-use, state of the art luxury towers. It is believed that the tallest tower will reach a height of 400 metres while two of the others will exceed 300 metres. These towers will be the grand centre of the mega-project.

Dubai Opera House

The Dubai Opera House is a state-of-the-art cultural centre in The Lagoons, accommodating an opera house with a 2,500 seating capacity, an 800-seat playhouse, a arts gallery, a performing arts school, and a '6-star' themed hotel. It will be the only opera house in the Persian Gulf region.

Progress

After initially targeting completion of some parts of Sedaifa in December 2008, there have been extensive delays, in some cases amounting to two and a half years. One reason may be the arrest of four key members of senior management, including the then CEO Abdulsalam Almarri on allegations of bribery and mistrust.1
