The FEU Advocate
The Far Eastern University (FEU) Advocate is the official student publication of Far Eastern University, Manila, Philippines. Considered before as one of the premiere student publications among Philippine universities, The FEU Advocate serves as the journalistic source of current news and information of students of Far Eastern University.
History
Established in July 12 1934, the student publication was released in a weekly basis to all members of the university, including faculty, students, and other interested readers within the university grounds. Initially covered university-related news, and featured students and university professors, and involved in the promotion of the university athletic teams in sports competitions they participated during their time, particularly the University Athletics Association of the Philippines.
In 1941-1947, the publication came into a temporary halt due to the occurrence of the World War 2. After which, in the mid 1950's, the student publication became popular outside the university, when it published issues uncovering anomalies involving the Philippine military in the region of Luzon, Philippines.
After almost 40 years of existence of the publication, it again came to a halt, when the former President Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law, wherein all Philippine publications criticizing the Philippine Government was either told or forced to shut down their respective operations and setting limits on journalism rights. The FEU Advocate was not spared and its operations were shut down.
The FEU Advocate revived
After years of silence, the student publication was revived by the Far Eastern University Central Student Organization (FEUCSO), the university's main student organization. Through their initiatives, they were able to revive the publication in the year 1990's. By 1998, The FEU Advocate was again an independent student publication of the university, having their own editorial board, and was able to release to the students 3 issues, and conducted their first FEU Advocate Exams, which was their standard procedure in staff selection and admission.
The FEU Advocate Online
Along with technological revolution and advancement, together with student journalism, the student publication established its website in September 2006, along with its own student forum, initially called The FEU Advocate Discussion Forum now changed its name to The FEU TAMBayan. The term "TAMBayan" came from the fusion of the words Tamaraw, the official mascot of Far Eastern University, and Bayan, a Tagalog term meaning community, country or town. At the same time the term tambayan, also a Tagalog term, refers to a place to hang-out. The online student forum created by the student publication, in September 2006, served as the organization's methods for feedback from readers and an online place of discussion of issues related to the university and including national issues and concerns.
