The defenestrator

the defenestrator, started in August of 1997, is a West Philadelphia-based radical newspaper. Covering local, national and international news, the paper also acts as a journal of theory and practice. Typical of most collectively run organizations, the defenestrator does not have paid staff or writers and relies on contributions from collective members, local activists as well as from local and global indymedia projects.

Self-referred to as "a journal of hope and refusal," the defenestrator does not adhere to a strictly defined ideology, but GeneRally derives its IDeaS from an anarchist or autonomist tradition, which proposes a revolutionary transformation of society, the abolition of property and all hierarchies and coercive power. In short, "a world without cops or bosses," as the defenestrator's website reads.

With a heavy focus on the prison industrial complex, the defenestrator features articles written by prisoners, including a continuing column by Robert X. Holbrook, a political prisoner held captive in SCI Greene, in Pennsylvania. The paper frequently features updates on the ongoing struggle to free Mumia Abu Jamal. Roughly one third of the paper's distribution is to prisoners across the country.
