The coastal gardener

The Coastal Gardener, a thirty minute nationally syndicated TV garden show with Host Dave Egbert was developed in January of 2004. This series takes viewers “from coast to coast” to display gardens and nurseries finding new plants for personal gardens all over the country. The Coastal Gardener is produced by Mark Morro and Big Sur Media, Inc. based in Big Sur, CA. Dave Egbert is also a writer of numerous newspaper and magazine articles, and a book Big Ideas for Small Gardens.

Development

Development of The Coastal Gardener was a collaborative effort between Executive producer Mark Morro and show host Dave Egbert. Given the location of Dave’s own garden on the Big Sur, California coast, producers elected to use this as the start and finish of every show. The show then moves to an on location, garden or nursery, sites across America visiting with plant experts and/or celebrity guests. During these visits Dave focuses on teaching viewers about specific plants for different climate zones. The only section of the show that covers any “how-to” is “Ask Dave” where viewers get to ask questions of Dave.

Production

The Coastal Gardener is shot with attention to the details of the many plants covered in the course of an episode. This helps viewers to understand the conversations between Dave and his guest. The visuals of the show are further helped by Dave’s unique modes of travel. It is rumored that Dave will travel with the show to Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Awards

The production of The Coastal Gardener has earned four awards in 2007, and two in 2006. Dave Egbert won an Accolade Award for On-Air Talent, a Telly Award for Use of Humor and another Telly Award for Entertainment. Mark Morro and the production crew have won Aurora Awards for Production Execution and Videography, as well as a Telly Award for Videography.
