Thachil Family

Thachil family is one of The Ancient and aristocratic family from Ernakulam District , Kerala State.

North Kuthiathode village is the place where Thachil family originate from. This is one of The Famous and respected Syrian Catholic family from the region.More than 6000 Thachil families are spread all over the world.

Family history

It is believed that St. Thomas, the disciple of Jesus Christ who came to India in 52 AD, landed in the port town of Kodungalloor and established a Christian community there.

Thachil Illam was one of the famous Brahmin tharavadu in Kerala.Thachil Brahmins were the chief priests of the Thiru Moozhikkulam temple.They converted to Christianity and migrated to Kuthiathode.Thachil Variyath was the Grand father of Thachil family who migrated to Kuthiathode. In a span of time many of the families migrated to various parts of kerala where they came to be known with the additional of surnames with Thachil. Thachil Kannai in Puthenchira,Thrissur district is one among them. They emerged as prominent business people. Now there are almost 300 families residing in Puthenchira. Thachil Kannai has branches in Chalakudi, Perambra and Mothirakanni.

Personalities

Thachil Mathoo Tharakan (1741 - 1814) played a key role in Kerala/Travancore-Cochin History towards the latter part of the eighteenth century and early nineteenth century. Mathu Tharakan was Commerce Minister to Dharma Raja and Maharajah Bala Rama Varma of Travancore. Mathoo Tharakan was a leading trader and influential Christian leader, among the Syrian Christians of Kerala, India. The Title 'tharakan' is granted by the King to indicate 'a noble trader'.
