Tax Fairness Oregon

Tax Fairness Oregon is the largest tax fairness organization in the U.S. state of Oregon. Its mission is to "reform our tax code so that it serves the common good, not special interests." It tries to shape tax policy by:

  • Monitoring and evaluating tax concepts.
  • Identifying, research and analyze critical bills.
  • Testifying at legislative hearings and meet with legislators.
  • Bringing public attention to tax issues through speakers, media outreach, workshops, and public relations.
  • Building coalitions with partner organizations.

History

Tax Fairness Oregon was started by Jody Wiser, a public school teacher who got fed up with the constant budget cuts at her school. "I was driving to work one day, and it was the 10th year of budget cuts," she remembers, and her school announced it would cut in half the hours of a PE teacher and a social worker. "I thought, nobody voted to destroy public education." She went to her principal and announced she would end her 18-year teaching career; soon after she founded Tax Fairness Oregon.
