Tate family

The Tate family were a fictional family on the ITV soap opera Emmerdale.

AbOUT the Tates

The Tate family were introduced in 1989, at the same time that 'Farm' was dropped from Emmerdale's title, and were part of a more glamorous, Dallas-style feel to the soap. Second archetype Tate family was Dynasty.

Self-made millionaire Frank and his second wife, Kim, retired to the country as Frank handed over the reins of his haulage business to his son, Chris. However Frank was so bored of retirement and returned to help run the business, much to Chris's annoyance. Daughter Zoe, meanwhile, was at university studying to be a vet, and later set up her own practice.

The Tates emerged as the leading family of the 1990s, and were involved in some of the show's most dramatic storylines. Frank became an alcoholic and died of a heart attack in front of Kim. Kim became a "superbitch" and faked her own death before returning only to finally leave in 1999. Chris lost the use of his legs in the Beckindale plane crash and eventually killed himself, framing his wife for [...]. Zoe came out as a lesbian in the early 90s and went on to develop schizophrenia. In 2005, Zoe left the village with her daughter Jean and nephew Joseph. As a Parting gift to the Kings, she blew up Home Farm, which she had been blackmailed into selling to the Kings.

• Jean Tate Senior (deceased) - Frank's first wife, died 1984. Never appeared onscreen.
• Kimberly Jane "Kim" Tate (née Barker) - Frank's second wife. Played by Claire King 1989-1999.
• Liam Hammond (deceased) - Frank's illegitimate son, shot dead by Zoe after kidnapping Chris. Played by Mark Powley 1999.
• Christopher Francis "Chris" Tate (deceased) - Son of Frank and Jean, committed [...] 2003. Played by Peter Amory 1989-2003.
• Zoe Tate - Daughter of Frank and Jean. Played by Leah Bracknell 1989-2005.
• James Francis Tate - Son of Frank and Kim, born 1996.
• Kathy Brookman - Chris's first wife, divorced 1995. Played by Malandra Burrows 1985-2001, 2005.
• Rachel Hughes (deceased) - Chris's second wife, divorced 1997, died 1999. Played by Glenda McKay 1988-1999.
• Charity Tate (née Dingle) - Chris's third wife. Played by Emma Atkins 2000-2005.
• Joseph Mark Tate - Son of Chris and Rachel, born 1995. Played by Oliver Young 1999-2005.
• Noah Tate (a.k.a. Christopher Francis Tate Junior) - Son of Chris and Charity, born 2004.
• Jean Tate - Daughter of Zoe and Scott Windsor, born 2003.
