Tarrafal Derby

The football rivalry between Beira-Mar Tarrafal and Varandinha is the chief rivalry of the northern part of the island of Santiago, it is the North Zone's oldest and one of the newest both in the island as a whole and in Cape Verde, the other being the Pedra Badejo rivalry featuring Desp. Santa Cruz and Scorpion Vermelho. The rivalry is called the Tarrafal Derby, one of two in the north of the island.

History

Not too many challenges has been made but AbOUT 20 overall. Tarrafal's first clubs were founded around the 1970s, its clubs merged into FC Tarrafal in 1985 and later became SC Beira-Mar. Varandinha was founded in 1994. Their first challenge was in the West Group of the island's North Zone (then called Centre and West Group).

The last time Beira-Mar Tarrafal defeated Varandinha was at a 4th round match of the final phase of the 2014-15 season while the last time Varandinha defeated Beira-Mar Tarrafal was at the 23rd round match in April 2016. Its recent two matches ended in a draw.

Cultural rivalry

The rivalry in part is also cultural for the city. Beira-Mar Tarrafal is an affiliate to S.C. Beira-Mar of Aveiro in Portugal.

Football rivalry

Beira-Mar is the second most popular football (soccer) club of the North Zone, Varandinha is considered the top five most popular clubs in the North Zone. Each club has a single [List of football clubs in Cape Verde by honours won#Santiago North Zone|regional championship honour]].
