Tampico Spice Company
Tampico Spice Co. is a family owned spice company based in Los Angeles, California. Started in 1947, it is known for selling seasonings in cellophane packaging and is owned by the Martinez family. It has been featured on Huell Howser's Visiting... with Huell Howser show, where he features "how the spices are ground, sifted and mixed into aromatic blends" and investigates the company's history. The company's products have also been discussed on the Bargain Hunter website.
Tampico imports spices from 22 countries and then sorts, re-cleans, grinds, sifts and blends the herbs, spices and seasoning blends. Tampico sells products through various channels: at retail the company's products are sold in small cellophane packages at grocery stores; larger drums are sold to institutional customers including food processors, caners, meat packers and spice wholesalers ; and one- and five-pound jars are sold to institutional clients including restaurants, schools, hospitals and to food-service distributors. The company's factory at 5941 South Central Avenue is noted for the aromas around it and as an employer.
History
Tampico was founded by Jesus Martinez, a native Californian. The company is in its third generation of family ownership.
