Tajikistan–Turkmenistan relations

Tajikistan–Turkmenistan relations are the diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, which were established on 27 January 1993. Both countries are full members of the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. In addition, Tajikistan is a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, while Turkmenistan holds associate membership. Cooperation between the two states has developed in the political, trade and economic, scientific and technical, cultural, and other spheres. More than 60 interstate and intergovernmental agreements have been signed between the two countries across various fields.

History

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 27 January 1993 with the signing of the Protocol on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Tajikistan.

In July 1995, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon paid a working visit to Ashgabat. In April 1999, Rahmon made another working visit to Turkmenistan to participate in a meeting of the Heads of State of Central Asia.

In October 2007, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow paid an official visit to Tajikistan. In December 2007, President of Tajikistan Rahmon paid a reciprocal official visit to Turkmenistan.

In 2009, President Rahmon made a working visit to Turkmenistan.

In March 2010, President Berdimuhamedow paid a state visit to the Republic of Tajikistan. In 2011, Berdimuhamedow visited Dushanbe to take part in a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States, during which a bilateral meeting with President Rahmon was held.

From 22 to 24 August 2012, President Rahmon paid an official visit to Turkmenistan. He also visited Ashgabat to attend the CIS Heads of State Summit on 5 December 2012 and the international celebration of Nowruz on 20 March 2013.

On 5–6 May 2014, President of Turkmenistan Berdimuhamedow paid an official visit to the Republic of Tajikistan.

Diplomatic missions

The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in Ashgabat has been in operation since February 1995. Since 17 April 2014, the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Turkmenistan has been Mahmudjon Nosirovich Sobirov.

The Embassy of Turkmenistan also operates in Dushanbe. The ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary is Chary Kakamuradovich Atayev.
