SVETN
The Southwest Virginia Education and Training Network (SVETN) is a consortium of 16 school divisions and 9 colleges and universities organized for the purpose of conducting video-based distance teaching. SVETN constructs, manages, and evaluates the use of special purpose interactive classrooms that are linked by fiber optic cable. The classrooms are in high schools and colleges.
SVETN also provides Elite Learning, a selection of asynchronous online courses for secondary students. Elite Learning courses are authored locally in collaboration with the SVETN partner school divisions whose teachers also provide the online instruction. Most Elite Learning courses are dual enrollment offerings in conjunction with SVETN's four community colleges.
The SVETN is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit corporation governed by educators. Headquartered in Abingdon at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, the corporation serves the educational needs of the residents of Bland, Buchanan, Carroll, Dickenson, Grayson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe Counties, all in Virginia. Organized in 1993, SVETN has grown from a network of three sites more than fifty sites with more locations under development.
