Supurna Sinha is an Indian physicist and an Associate Professor at the Raman Research Institute, Bangalore.

Early life

Supurna was born to Purnima Sinha and Surajit Chandra Sinha. Her mother is a physicist and her father was an anthropologist who passed away on 27 February 2002. Supurna married a theoretical Physicist, Prof. Joseph Samuel and together they have a daughter,Roshni who was born on 28 September 1996.

Education & Career

Supurna finished her B.Sc. from Jadavpur University in 1984 and M.S. from Syracuse University in 1988. She then completed her Ph.D on the topic Collective Dynamics in Dense Fluid Mixtures under M. Cristina Marchetti.

Supurna has focused her work on on semi-flexible polymer elasticity. Some of her work has been in the area of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, in particular, finite wave-vector extension of hydrodynamics applied to granular matter and bacterial bath. She has also applied statistical mechanical methods to lipid membranes to understand some issues in analogue quantum gravity and cosmology.

Areas of Interest

Her areas of interests include:

  • Soft condensed matter physics
  • Non-equilibrium statistical mechanics

Other Interests

After the birth of her daughter, Supurna has actively worked from home. She has written children's books and popular articles in addition to writing research papers in her area of expertise. She also illustrated a popular story by Rabindranath Tagore called Juta Abishkar for a Bengali webzine.
