Super transformation (other media)
In the various official Sonic the Hedgehog series media, a variety of SUPER forms Appear. Most are similar to the forms in the games, but there are some notably different ones. This articles covers the various super forms in these different media. Like the super transformations of the games, many of the forms featured in other media are granted by use of the Chaos Emeralds or the Master Emerald.
Sonic X
Sonic's most common super form, Super Sonic, is attainable in the Sonic X television series when Sonic absorbs the energy of all 7 Chaos Emeralds. As usual, Super Sonic looks like Sonic, but is yellow, and radiates a yellow/golden aura. He has the power to fly and his attacks are much stronger than in his normal from.
In the first episode of the third season of Sonic X, Super Sonic is facing off against the Metarex leader Dark Oak. The battle is fought to a standstill, and Sonic resorts to dispersing the Chaos Emeralds to the far corners of the galaxy to PReVENT them from being taken by Dark Oak.
A second "super form" of Sonic appears in Episode 67 of Sonic X, when Black Narcissus injures Chris Thorndyke and holds him and Cosmo captive. Sonic arrives (having been shot from the Sonic Driver directly into a pile of fake Chaos Emeralds) to see them locked up, with Chris left unconscious. In rage, Sonic transforms into a being dubbed by fans as "Dark Super Sonic". His body becomes completely black, and his eyes completely white, with no pupils or irises. He is surrounded by a black and blue power aura, as opposed to Super Sonic's yellow. This difference in transformation May Be caused by the pile of fake Chaos Emeralds in which Sonic landed earlier.
Dark Super Sonic seems to have all the powers of Super Sonic but none of the positive qualities. His personality is similar to Sonic the Comic's portrayal of Super Sonic or Darkspine Sonic. He relishes the prospect of destroying the two prototype Metarex, as shown by his devilish grin, mad cackle, and exaggerated frown. Unlike the Super Sonic from Sonic the Comic, however, this form can control himself and recognize whom he should attack and whom he should not. This form seems only to last a few seconds or until Sonic's rage is requited, but even in that short time he was able to destroy the two Metarex prototypes, Silver and Gold.
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
Whilst cleaning up Dr Robotnik's lab, Coconuts accidentally knocks a bunch of chemicals into a bathtub. When Robotnik enters the lab, he slips on a mop and lands head first into the tub. The chemical formula end up giving him superhuman abilities, turning him into Super Robotnik, in a manner parodying most superheroes like Superman. His abilities include flying, super strength, x-Ray Vision, freeze breath, a super-processing brain, a telescopic eye, and heat vision. With these powers he humiliates Sonic and kidnaps Mobius's world leaders. He challenges Sonic to a gladiator contest where he, if he loses, must leave Mobius forever. However, Robotnik soon learns that he is vulnerable in his caboose due to it not being soaked in the formula. When Sonic and Tails discover this, they get Professor Von Shlimmer to invent a powder which penetrates him through his weak spot and makes him weak. Whilst initially ineffective, Sonic is soon able to give Robotnik a kick in the bottom and into some disgusting yuck, causing him to lose his super powers.
In the Quest for the Chaos Emeralds saga, Robotnik travels across time and collects the four Chaos Emeralds of Invisibility, Invincibility, Immortality and Life. When placed around his neck, he becomes the Supreme High Robotnik. In this form, Robotnik becomes giant with rippling muscles and long fingernails, and can use any of the powers at will. However, once the emeralds are removed, he reverts back to normal Robotnik.
Sonic the Hedgehog (TV series)
Although not technically a 'Super Form' transformation, Sonic and Princess Sally Acorn harness the energies of the Deep Power Stones to achieve extraordinary powers in order to thwart Robotnik's Doomsday Project in the finale episode, which had the same name. While imbued with the power of the stones, both Sonic and Sally were surrounded by glowing violet energy auras and could move at blinding speeds, tearing apart Robotnik's entire operation in a matter of seconds. It also seemed to have some lingering effects, such as producing a small shockwave when Sally and Sonic gave each other a high-five, and shooting up fireworks when the two kiss near the end of the episode. Presumably, like a standard Super transformation, this ambient energy would have been temporary.
Sonic the Hedgehog (comic)
While the games and Sonic X only use Super and Hyper Forms, the Sonic the Hedgehog Comic Series has the largest variety of transformations for various characters. Several characters have as many as three super forms, and the comics are also the first to introduce the concept of super forms that would have lasted indefinitely were it not for certain circumstances.
Sonic the Hedgehog
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comics published by Archie Comics, Super Sonic is one of Sonic the Hedgehog’s super-powered forms. In this series, Super Sonic first appeared during the series' more comical era. There, he battled a roboticized and enlarged lizard calling itself the "Universalamander". At the end of the issue, he would still have a "super" sense of humor by putting a whoopee cushion on Antoine's chair. He does not reappear until the 48-page special "Super Sonic vs. Hyper Knuckles" (Hyper Knuckles was what the comics used to refer to Knuckles' seven-emerald form rather than the higher level), and then makes numerous appearances later on, including where he battled the emerald-empowered Master Mogul, along with Hyper Knuckles and Turbo Tails, and the battle against Perfect Chaos in the Sonic Adventure adaptation. Afterwards, Super Sonic made a return appearance when Sonic discovered red-colored emeralds on an alien world, causing Super Sonic to be born as a crazed lunatic, separate from Sonic himself (similar to Fleetway's version of Super Sonic). This duplicate's existence ended when his powers faded. When A.D.A.M.(controlling Tommy Turtle) successfully gathers all of the Chaos Emeralds in the universe, Sonic shows up to battle A.D.A.M. and uses the energy from the Emeralds to transform into Super Sonic once more. Unfortunately, A.D.A.M. was also able to use the power of the emeralds to ascend to the level of Super, and fought Super Sonic to a standstill until Tommy temporarily regained control and allowed himself to be destroyed by Robotnik's Egg Fleet. Later, during the return of Knuckles' old arch-nemesis Enerjak, who was eventually revealed to be Knuckles himself brainwashed by Dr. Finitevus, Sonic rushed back to the Master Emerald and absorbed some of its power to transform himself into Super Sonic (neutralizing Finitevus' tainted spell on the Emerald in the process), so he could battle and save his converted friend.
Sonic also has the ability to transform into Ultra Sonic when empowered by the vast energies of one of this setting's version of the Super Emeralds — it resembles Hyper Sonic in some ways, but Sonic's fur color does not change. He merely gains greater strength and speed, as well as elemental powers: he was able to generate water and create walls of rock. Ultra Sonic also appears to be almost a separate consciousness from Sonic; after transforming back from him the first time, Sonic had no recollection of the transformation. In addition, in this form, Ultra Sonic can transform into various elemental forms based on his environment, such as Solar Sonic, Eco Sonic, and Polar Sonic. He only took on these additional personas once, when he used the power of a Super Emerald to enhance his speed and save Knothole village from a temporal beam fired by a satellite controlled by none other than Robo-Robotnik. As a result of exposure to this energy, Sonic took on the design seen in games beginning with Sonic Adventure.
Ultra Sonic is generally considered to be Sonic's second super transformation, whereas Super Sonic is his first. Solar, Eco, and Polar Sonics are all transformations based upon Sonic's location on the globe: Solar comes from being in hot areas, Eco from forest areas, and Polar from cold areas. Ultra Sonic's abilities far surpass Super Sonic's abilities. In this form he has the ability to manipulate the elements and his voice changes, he is also substantially faster than his previous incarnation.
Following the defeat of Ixis Naugus in the Super Special #4, Sonic and Tails set off in an adventure around Mobius which eventually takes them to Nate's castle in the far north. It is here where they find a near limitless supply of power rings (specific number if not stated, but it is assumed to be numbered in the thousands.) Comparatively, the first transformation requires 50 power rings and 7 chaos emeralds, thus the power of several thousand power rings is sufficient to bring Sonic and Tails to their second transformations. It is revealed during this arc that Ixis Naugus' purpose was to find Nate Morgan's power ring storehouse, and take it's power for himself, whereby he would open the Zone of Silence and merge it with the reality of Mobius Prime, thus gaining ultimate power. The ensuing battle allowed Sonic, Tails, and Naugus to divide the power rings between the three, thus causing transformations in all of them. Thus Sonic was joined by Hyper Tails (Who was also treated as a second transformation with thousands of rings and a form very similar to the games' version) in a battle against Ixis Naugus.
Miles "Tails" Prower
In the Sonic the Hedgehog Comics, Miles "Tails" Prower has an assortment of transformations. His traditional improved mode is Turbo Tails, in which his appearance changes with the addition of a cape and a change of fur color (dark orange). Turbo Tails first appeared during a battle against Master Mogul, where he worked together with Super Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, and other combatants to bring Mogul down. He later returned when Chaos Knuckles lost control, and fought him to a standstill, although he was defeated by Chaos Knuckles.
Tails can also assume a form known as Hyper Tails, with four Flickies flying around him, which he used in a battle with Ixis Naugus. It should be noted that Hyper Tails is identical in appearance to Super Tails from the video game series, most likely following the same trend as Knuckles's powered up forms having the "Hyper" and "Super" adjectives exchanged. Working together with Ultra Sonic, he was able to achieve victory, but afterwards has not taken this form, nor was he able to remember assuming this form after reverting to normal. Presumably, this form mirrors the power of Ultra Sonic in being stronger than Tails' Turbo form.
Tails' final transformation occurred only once during a battle with Mammoth Mogul, his comic continuity nemesis. Joining together with countless other versions of himself, Tails assumed the giant, muscular form known as Titan Tails, a being fueled by cosmic energy. He was able to defeat Mogul, and imprisoned him in his Chaos Emerald.
Dr. Eggman's "son" A.D.A.M. later captured Tails so he could force him to transform into Turbo Tails. A.D.A.M. needed him, along with Shadow the Hedgehog to complete his master plan, for it was foretold that Turbo Tails was the "Chosen One" that would one day bring together every Chaos Emerald in the universe, causing great harmony, thus giving A.D.A.M. an unimaginable amount of power (ironically, the prediction was made by none other than Mammoth Mogul, who is well-known for being Tails' worst enemy). When Sonic arrived to battle A.D.A.M., Super Shadow helped Turbo Tails to finish the job by teleporting all of the Chaos Emeralds into the Zone of Silence. Unfortunately, this action resulted in the Chaos Emeralds falling instead into the hands of Feist, who combined them into seven gems and used their power to seize control of the Zone of Silence and transform it into the Special Zone.
Knuckles the Echidna
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series, Knuckles can use 7 Chaos Emeralds to turn into Hyper Knuckles, and use the Master Emerald to turn into Super Knuckles. The term "Hyper Knuckles" for his first transformation was later scrapped in favor of "Super Knuckles", in order to correlate with the naming convention used by the games. As both, Knuckles’ red fur originally became pink, and he has the same powers he has in the games; later, his appearance would be shown to include red eyes like those of Super Sonic.
Knuckles was eventually forced to transform into his most powerful form to date-and thus far the most powerful Chaos entity on Mobius-due to battles with his opponents which set off the enhancements and experiments his father Locke had performed before his birth, Chaos Knuckles. Chaos Knuckles was incredibly powerful, and possessed various types of Chaos powers. These included Chaos Blasts, teleportation, time and space traveling, healing ability, mind control, and reality manipulation. Knuckles used these powers in a number of ways, from undoing the effects of the Dark Legion's Quantum Beam to creating a bouquet for his girlfriend Julie-Su to faking his own death. His most dramatic use of these powers was his attempt to alter history so that Mobius would be changed for the better, which resulted in Sonic and the other Freedom Fighters being teleported to several other realities before everything was put back to normal. An interesting note is that Chaos Knuckles is not a second super transformation for Knuckles, since it was due to the experiments performed by the Brotherhood of Guardians before Knuckles was born that he achieved these abilities. Unlike his other transformations, this form was apparently permanent, and Knuckles would have presumably remained in this form indefinitely.
Unfortunately, Knuckles lost these abilities when he died during a battle with Mammoth Mogul, who was later revealed to have stolen Knuckles's powers for himself, though Knuckles retained the appearance of Chaos Knuckles in the afterlife. Because he chose to return to Mobius to aid in the battle against the Xorda, however, he returned to his normal appearance and, for a brief time following his death, was stripped of all his unusual powers-including his Chaos abilities-thus preventing him from transforming into Chaos Knuckles. Since his return left the Chaos Force unbalanced, Knuckles unwittingly allowed Mogul to seize absolute control of it, which only came to an end with the Mammoth's defeat at the hands of Titan Tails. Knuckles later regained his powers after using the Master Emerald to transform into Super Knuckles to battle and kill Robotnik's Overlander agent Hunter, but he has not as yet resumed his Chaos Knuckles form-something that doesn't really bother him, as he actually prefers his normal red-furred form.
After learning of the destruction of all but 10% of the Echidna people, Knuckles determined to set things right by absorbing the powers of the Master Emerald. Unfortunately, he fell victim to a hypnotic spell placed on the jewel that left him susceptible to outside influence, and became convinced that the only way he could use this power was by becoming a new Enerjak. He then set out to use his powers to begin recreating Mobius in the way he believed best, dissolving the Dark Legion, transporting the Echidnas to Albion, banishing the Dingoes to Sandopolis, and then going to New Mobotropolis to confront his friends. After a battle against Shadow the Hedgehog, he was captured by the Egg Fleet, only to escape from the Egg Grape Chamber and lay waste to New Megaopolis before returning to Angel Island and confronting Super Sonic.
It appears that Knuckles could become Chaos Knuckles again, as such an event occurred in the history of the first Mobius: 25 Years Later alternate future. Following his transformation back into Chaos Knuckles, the Guardian killed Dr. Eggman and attempted to recreate Mobius according to his desires, which resulted in the disappearance of Julie-Su's cyborg implants. However, before he got very far along, Sonic stopped him by accidentally activating an alien device. The resulting explosion caused Knuckles to revert to his normal form, and cost him his right eye, which was replaced with a cybernetic implant.
Enerjak
As a result of absorbing the energy of eleven Chaos Emeralds, Dimitri transformed into the perpetual super-powered form of Enerjak, which lasted for a number of centuries. Like Chaos Knuckles, it can be assumed that Dimitri would have remained in this form indefinitely. However, Enerjak ceased to be when Mammoth Mogul drained the Chaos energy from him, reducing him to the frail old form of Dimitri. Over a year later, though, Dr. Finitevus was able to restore Enerjak-his new body provided by Knuckles-through the power of the Master Emerald. After a brief campaign on Angel Island, he traveled to New Mobotropolis, ravaging the city until he was subdued by the arrival of the Egg Fleet, which took him prisoner. He quickly escaped, decimating the fleet and Robotnik's city before getting involved in a battle with Super Sonic.
Mammoth Mogul
Mammoth Mogul is one of the few villains to possess his own Super form. Known as Master Mogul, he commands a wide range of abilities. Among these are increased reality warping powers, and destructive energy capable of destroying whole realities. He first gained this form after draining power from Enerjak, and later after draining the Chaos power of Knuckles the Echidna. This latter success was heightened when Knuckles's return from the dead unbalanced the Chaos Force, allowing Mogul to seize complete control of it. While in this virtually omnipotent form, he attempted to destroy the entire multiverse, but was defeated by Titan Tails. Drained of power, he was then trapped inside his Chaos Emerald.
Ixis Naugus
After absorbing a huge but unspecified number of Power Rings, Ixis Naugus attained a power level akin to that of Ultra Sonic, Hyper Tails, and Super Knuckles. While in this state, he battled Ultra Sonic and Hyper Tails but was defeated despite the fact that their power ran out faster than his did due to the intervention of Nate Morgan. In this form, he was able to open a portal to the Zone of Silence with the intent of merging it with Mobius to make himself all-powerful. This improved Naugus also could generate beams of fire from his eyes, create ice from the air, and summon torrents of water. Since then, he has not attained this level of power again, and no name was ever given for this incarnation. Naugus has also failed to assume any other forms of higher power than he is normally capable of.
Scourge the Hedgehog
It is assumed that, like his Mobius Prime self, Scourge the Hedgehog should be able to transform into a powered up form known as Super Scourge. Though this is yet to be actually seen in the comics, it is stated as an ability in his profile. Though Super Scourge's appearance and abilities are unknown, the profile describes them as very similar to Super Sonic, and, just like Sonic, he would need 7 Chaos Emeralds to assume this state.
Shadow the Hedgehog
Shadow has made several appearances as Super Shadow in the comics. The first occurred when engaging the Xorda over Mobius, buying time for a Bem ship to escape (the Bem having rescued Shadow after the comics' version of the events in Sonic Adventure 2). Shadow later became Super Shadow to join with Super Sonic and Turbo Tails in an effort to prevent A.D.A.M. from harnessing the powers of all the Chaos Emeralds in the universe. While Super Sonic held A.D.A.M. off, Super Shadow worked together with Turbo Tails to send all the Chaos Emerald to the Zone of Silence.
A.D.A.M.
During the "gathering" of all the Chaos Emeralds in the universe, A.D.A.M. was confronted by Super Sonic. Using the vast amount of Emeralds in the area, he was able to achieve his own Super form, but was ultimately destroyed when Tommy Turtle managed to regain control of his body (which A.D.A.M. had taken possession of using the nanites in his shell) and flew into the massed fire of Dr. Eggman's Egg Fleet, apparently [...] them both. As is the case with Ixis Naugus, no name was given to A.D.A.M.'s powered up form, though "Super A.D.A.M." seems likely.
Sonic the Comic
Super Sonic
In Sonic the Comic, published by Fleetway, Super Sonic was a psychotic, genocidal entity which manifested itself in Sonic's body when Sonic was under extreme stress or empowered by Chaos Energy. Unlike his video game counterpart, Sonic the Comic's Super Sonic would destroy things if he got angry, wanted to show off, or even when he was feeling bored. He enjoys the prospect of [...] Sonic's friends and in #184 deliberately held back so as not to kill them too quickly.
Sonic first transformed into Super Sonic shortly after the events of the first Sonic the Hedgehog video game, having successfully regained all six of the Chaos Emeralds. But when brought together, the Chaos Emeralds become unstable, and radiate Chaos Energy, generating a spatial warp that sends them into the Special Zone. When they did so on this occasion, Sonic took the full force of the energy, and transformed into Super Sonic. Consequently, whenever he became stressed or extremely angry, Sonic would tap into this Chaos Energy soaked into his body, transforming into Super Sonic; because of Super's uncontrollable nature, these transformations were extremely risky.
As time went on, Super become both more powerful - able to fire energy beams from his eyes and wield explosive Chaos Energy - and more dangerous. In STC #50, he tore apart a Metallix and immediately attacked Knuckles before Sonic return to normal. In #64, where Super forced Commander Brutus into a retreat (tearing off the robot's hand), he almost killed Amy Rose when Brutus tried to use her as a human shield, noticing too late Super wasn't stopping.
A turning point came when Sonic went to visit Porker Lewis on the Floating Island and accidentally fell into the pit where the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emerald were suspended. Super Sonic was even more deranged (sporting jagged fangs) and, with no immediate threat to occupy him, decided to go destroy Amy Rose and the other Freedom Fighters. After a destructive battle, the Freedom Fighters used the Tornado as a decoy while they escaped; when Sonic returned to normal, he believed he'd killed his friends and so went underground. The Freedom Fighters managed to track Super Sonic‘s energies, after he had transformed again during a bar brawl. To save Sonic from himself, his friends channelled the Chaos Energy out of him, through a Star Post into the Special Zone; but so great was the energy that Super Sonic was now given an independent existence in the Special Zone.
The new Super Sonic allied himself with a crime kingpin called Lord Sidewinder, but turned on him the instant the original Sonic arrived, leading to a showdown. It ended when the Omni-Viewer absorbed Super Sonic and used his space/time manipulation powers to freeze time for themselves, immobilizing both of them. Eventually, however, it transpired that the Omni-Viewer had merely reduced time to a crawl and that Super would eventually emerge. Sonic and co. sealed the Omni-Viewer in an asteroid so that nobody could get to Super Sonic and that even if he escaped, he would be trapped.
However, Super Sonic managed to free himself from the Omni-Viewer and used his powers to turn himself in an electron bomb, intending to destroy his asteroid prison. After discovering this would cause a planet-wide electromagnetic pulse, Sonic had the Omni-Viewer transport the asteroid to Mobius before detonation so it would deactivate all of Doctor Robotnik's computers & robots. Super Sonic was so drained of energy by this that he became an amnesiac and was taken in by two old-age pensioners once back on Mobius' surface. (#97-100)
While the Freedom Fighters remained unable to find Super Sonic, the hedgehog himself applied for work at the Groovy Train, a coffee bar owned by the witch Ebony and her psychic friend Pyjamas. In the process of fighting a villain, Super's memory returned but his new amiable personality remained; he immediately renounced the use his powers for fear of becoming his former demonic self once more. He then resided with Ebony and Pyjamas from then on, living a peaceful life.
In the final Sonic the Comic story, Super Sonic was finally dying as his Chaos Energy ran out. Ebony helped him reach the site of the confrontation between Sonic, Robotnik, and the monstrous Chaos, hoping to recharge him. Super Sonic hurled himself into Perfect Chaos, absorbing all the Chaos Energy from the creature and reverting it back into its Drakon state. Re-energized, Super Sonic was his demonic self again. To save Mobius from him, Sonic was forced to reintegrate with him.
In Sonic the Comic's unofficial continuation Sonic the Comic - Online, Sonic has turned into Super Sonic twice; the second time, he defeated Shadow the Hedgehog with ease. A media smear campaign is claiming Sonic is merely a front for Super Sonic.
