Sunwing travel group

The Sunwing Travel Group is an integrated travel services company serving North America, which through its various subsidiaries provides various vacation packages to multiple destinations. It is headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

History

Sunwing was founded by the Hunter Family in 2002.

TUI Merger

In September 2009, Sunwing reached a merger agreement with TUI AG. Under the terms, TUI contributed $101 million along with its Canadian Operations, while Sunwing contributed Sunwing Vacations, Signature Vacations and Sell Off Vacations. TUI received a 49% equity stake with 25% voting interest in Sunwing upon the completion of the merger.

The merger was met with opposition and challenge from the Canadian Transportation Agency at the request of an unknown person and rival corporation Transat A.T. due to concerns of foreign ownership in Canadian corporations. The investigation ultimately determined that Sunwing was still Canadian controlled.
