Sunset Boulevard (Disney's Hollywood Studios)
Sunset Boulevard is a themed area at Disney's Hollywood Studios, a theme park at the Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida, near Orlando. Inspired by Sunset Boulevard and other areas of Los Angeles during the Golden Age of Hollywood, the area features stylized recreations of historic Southern California architecture, theaters, shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.
Opened in 1994, Sunset Boulevard was the first major expansion of the park, then known as Disney-MGM Studios. Its original centerpiece, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, opened on July 22, 1994. The area was subsequently expanded with the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater, home of Fantasmic!, in 1998 and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster in 1999.
History
Development and opening
Disney-MGM Studios opened on May 1, 1989, primarily as a combination of a theme park and a working film and television production facility. As attendance increased following the park's opening, Walt Disney Imagineering began developing an expansion west of Hollywood Boulevard. The resulting area, Sunset Boulevard, became the park's first major expansion.
Construction of the expansion began in the early 1990s. Sunset Boulevard was designed as an idealized interpretation of Los Angeles during Hollywood's golden age, continuing the architectural themes established on Hollywood Boulevard while incorporating influences from historic theaters, restaurants and commercial buildings in Southern California.
Several facilities opened shortly before the area's principal attraction. Legends of Hollywood, a retail location on Sunset Boulevard, opened on June 12, 1994. The Sunset Ranch Market dining area opened in June 1994 with several counter-service restaurants and food stands.
The Theater of the Stars, which had previously been located on Hollywood Boulevard, was rebuilt on Sunset Boulevard. Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage began performances in the new theater on June 15, 1994.
The area's principal attraction, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, opened on July 22, 1994. The attraction is housed within the fictional Hollywood Tower Hotel, whose large tower forms the principal visual landmark at the end of Sunset Boulevard.
Later expansion
During the late 1990s, Disney expanded Sunset Boulevard with additional entertainment and thrill attractions.
A purpose-built amphitheater was constructed beyond the original street for a Florida version of Fantasmic!, the nighttime spectacular that had debuted at Disneyland in California in 1992. The new Hollywood Hills Amphitheater opened with the Florida production of Fantasmic! on October 15, 1998. Unlike the Disneyland production, which is presented along the Rivers of America, the Florida version was designed for a dedicated amphitheater.
The following year, Disney added Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, an enclosed launched roller coaster adjacent to the Tower of Terror. The attraction was dedicated on July 29, 1999, and opened to the public the following day. The coaster was the first attraction at Walt Disney World to combine a high-speed launch with multiple complete inversions.
Sunset Showcase
A new indoor entertainment venue, Sunset Showcase, opened near Rock 'n' Roller Coaster on December 4, 2015. Designed as a flexible venue capable of accommodating different entertainment offerings, it initially housed Club Disney, a dance-party experience featuring Disney characters.
Beginning in 2016, the building was also used for Club Villain, a separately ticketed dining and entertainment event featuring Disney villains.
On March 31, 2019, Sunset Showcase became the home of Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy, a Cars-themed stage attraction featuring a full-size Lightning McQueen figure and a wraparound video screen. The attraction operated until October 7, 2024.
Sunset Showcase subsequently underwent another renovation for Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After, which opened on May 27, 2025. The musical stage show is framed around the Magic Mirror and features Cruella de Vil, Captain Hook and Maleficent arguing over which villain has been treated most unfairly.
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster retheming
Disney announced in 2024 that the Aerosmith theme of Rock 'n' Roller Coaster would be replaced with a new storyline featuring The Muppets and their fictional rock group The Electric Mayhem. The Aerosmith version subsequently closed in 2026.
The reimagined attraction, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets, opened on May 26, 2026. The attraction retained the existing roller-coaster system while replacing the Aerosmith storyline with one involving the Electric Mayhem traveling across Hollywood to reach a concert. The renovation also introduced an Audio-Animatronics figure of Scooter, the first Audio-Animatronics figure of the character.
Design and architecture
Sunset Boulevard is themed to an idealized version of Los Angeles during the 1930s and 1940s rather than being a literal recreation of the real Sunset Boulevard. Its architecture draws heavily from Art Deco and Streamline Moderne, styles commonly associated with Southern California during the period.
Buildings along the street incorporate elements inspired by historic Los Angeles landmarks. The Once Upon a Time shop, for example, uses an Art Deco cinema façade inspired by the former Carthay Circle Theatre, the Los Angeles theater at which Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs premiered in 1937. Disney describes the location as an Art Deco-style cinema.
The Sunset Ranch Market was designed in the style of Los Angeles's historic Farmers Market, with individual food counters grouped around an outdoor dining area.
The street's forced perspective and sightlines emphasize the Hollywood Tower Hotel, the fictional setting of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Its tower is visible from much of the park and serves as the architectural focal point of Sunset Boulevard.
