Steve Schaver

Steven Bruce (Steve) Schaver was born on March 5, 1954. Schaver is currently the President of EchoStar International Corporation, and holds positions on advisory boards all over the world.

Early life

Born on March 5, 1954 in Geneseo, Illinois, Schaver is the second of four children of Donald and Frances Schaver. He has an older sister Debra, a younger brother Michael and a younger sister Tamra. He grew up with his family in a rural farming community in northwestern Illinois between the Mississippi River and the Rock River. He graduated as Valedictorian of his high school class from Erie High School in 1972.

Education

Schaver completed his Bachelors degree at Luther College, located in Decorah, Iowa. Years later, he would help create a scholarship that bears his name: the Steven B. Schaver Spanish Studies Scholarship. “This scholarship is to be awarded to qualified students who can show evidence of financial need, who are majoring in Spanish, and are participating in a Spanish study-abroad program.”

Schaver completed his Masters degree in Business at Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Arizona

Personal life

On July 4, 1992, Schaver married Asunta Eizaguirre, a Spanish national from Madrid. They currently reside in Madrid with their three children, Cristina, Bea and Carlos. Schaver, who has dual nationality, is completely fluent in Spanish, which he began studying in high school. He is also fluent in French.

Career

Schaver met the co-founders of EchoStar Corporation during his time at Thunderbird University. He joined the company not long after it was founded in 1980 in Denver, Colorado.

He worked for several years at the EchoStar office in Almelo, The Netherlands.

Schaver served as Dish Network’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) from February 1996 through August 2000. He also served as Dish Network’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) from November 1996 until April 2000. During this time, he was stationed in Denver, Colorado, where EchoStar headquarters are located. In April of 2000, he was named President of EchoStar International Corporation.

During the summer of 2001, the Schaver family moved to Madrid, Spain, which is where the EchoStar International Corporation offices are currently based.

Board positions

Schaver holds several positions on different boards across the globe.

He is currently serving on two educational boards. He is a member of Luther College’s Board of Regents along with other Alumni. He is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American School of Madrid.

He also serves on the boards of companies that work with EchoStar International, which can be found all over the world.
