This arc opens with a training session of A'sharad Hett by the Dark Woman. Shortly after, Ki-Adi-Mundi is called to a session of the Jedi Council. The matter at hand: insurgents on the planet Lannik are finally willing to begin peacetalks. The talks are to take place on the planet Malastare, in the Mid Rim. Six members of the Council are chosen to go as mediators: Ki-Adi-Mundi, Even Piell, Plo Koon, Depa Billaba, Yaddle, and Mace Windu. As Mace Windu and Eeth Koth complete the Concordance of Fealty, Ki-Adi-Mundi finds his padawan talking with a young Anakin Skywalker.
As the Phoebos Memorial Run draws to a close with Sebulba as winner, Senator Aks Moe, the Red Iaro leader and a Ffib priest discuss a conspiracy to assassinate the Jedi leaders. Shortly after the Jedi arrive. On the way to their quarters, they realize they are being watched. Adi Gallia and Even Piell decide to stay behind and are promptly, attacked by the Ffib priest and the [...]. When more Jedi arrive, the pair flee.
As the Gran governor delays the Jedi, they discuss they matters at hand. Finally, the talks begin and the respective diplomats are brought in. Tempers get hot quick at the negotiations, and Master Windu is forced to end talks for the day early. Meanwhile the final race of the Vinta Harvest Classic is beginning. As they leave, the Lannik advisor Hutar Zash offers the Jedi councillors a ride. To their surprise, their Lannik hosts attempt an assassination on the Jedi's lives on the way. The Jedi narrowly escape, but fall straight into the path of the oncoming podracers.
As half of the Jedi envoy fall, seemingly to their deaths, the others dive in for a quick rescue. Now aware of the Red Iaro treachery, the Jedi return to the palace, just in time. As they expected, the Lannik prince is being held hostage, and his captors have let a pair of ferocious akk dogs loose on him. While the Jedi incapacitate the dogs, the [...] leader attempts to escape via jetpack, but is sucked into the engine of one of the podracers. Mace Windu, upset at the exploitation of the akks, which come from his homeworld of Haruun Kal, sets out to find the smugglers responsible.
Shortly after reaching Nar Shaddaa, Mace Windu attempts to stop a man from [...] an old beggar woman. When Master Windu suddenly finds himself outgunned, Billaba reveals her presence. After the remaining thugs are chased off, a third, mysterious Jedi appears and gives them information on their search for the akk dogs. Grateful to the Jedi, the old woman gives them one of her only possessions: an old swoop, with which to reach the lower levels. As the two Masters approach their destination, they are attacked by vicious vrblthers.
As the two Jedi try to fight off the vrblthers, they crash land directly in the middle of the Circus Horrificus. As Master Windu attempts to reason with the Hutt proprietor of the arena, he releases the crazed akks on him. After Mace Windu's failed attempt to calm the beasts, a riot breaks out in the stands over bets made by one Vilmarh Grahrk. The Jedi see their opportunity and attack the Hutt, and arrest the manager of the circus, with Republic reinforcements on the way.
