St. John's University Center for Global Development

The St. John's University Center for Global Development is St. John’s University's center for research on all issues relating to international development and social justice. The center draws upon specialists from all over the world as well as its own faculty, staff, and independent researchers for scholarly research and programs in the varying fields of global development. Activities promoted by the Center include an M.A. in Global Development and Social Justice, Intensive Certificate Programs in specific global development issue areas, conferences, internships, research projects, a Global Development Team , a Resource Center, a "Micro-Development Projects" initiative, and joint ventures with other associations.

The Master in Global Development and Social Justice is offered by St. John’s University, a Graduate program under the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with Unicaritas (Caritas of Rome, Idente Foundation for Studies and Research and ISMA- Istituti di Santa Maria in Aquiro), and is guided by a Steering Committee chaired by the Director of the Center for Global Development, who provides administrative oversight and support. It is a two-year program in English that includes 11 three-credit courses for a total of 33 credits. Four courses are taken at the Unicaritas headquarters in Rome at the beginning and end of the program in July, while the remainder of the curriculum is delivered via on-line Distance Learning that can be accessed worldwide. Given the nature of the program, the curriculum offers significant training in Information Technology (the program provides each student with a laptop computer and a digital camera), and an optional internship related to the student’s required capstone project.

Information Resources for Development Professionals, Development and the Role of Organizations, Economics of Development, GIS Applications for Integrated and Sustainable Development, Political Issues of Development, Gender and Social Justice in Development, International Communication and Global Development, Health Care Issues in Global Development.
